Yard Care for Dummies

Not so much lawn but still related. I have 4 wooden flower/shrub boxes in the front yard in my new house. 2 of them along the house itself and 2 out in the actual front yard. Only 1 of them has anything still growing in it and 2 other have dead shrubs. I am trying to decide what to do with them. They all have the black lining and some old mulch.

I think I am going to just dig everything up and just fill them with mulch/river rock and some decorations. I am leaning towards the rock as it wont go everywhere, but the red mulch looks really nice. Any suggestions or maybe what to plant there that takes minimal amount of care? I will most likely just remove the 2 in the actual yard and seed grass there later on.

You don't happen to live in CR do you? I will be looking to get rid of a bunch of river river rock in the coming months.

Nope Des Moines, but thanks for the offer.

Just had a bunch of river rock delivered from Iowa Landscape supply in DSM. $35/yard, plus $45 for delivery up to 10 yards, I think. Cheapest I found in the metro.

We're looking at making a rock patio at our place in Robins. Not 100% sure what type of rock we're looking at yet. What would you charge for the rock and how much do you have? Feel free to PM if you prefer.

My yard is a disaster. My neighbors for years have done nothing so their yard is nothing but dandelions. You just can't stop those when there are so many next door.

This picture is from a couple of years ago. You can clearly see the property line. Since then dandelions have just been non stop in my yard.

I have the same issue - except on all three sides! Not only dandelions, but clover too....and other things. I just grit my teeth and try to keep them at bay. But it's disappointing....

Anybody got a recommendation on something to kill crabgrass without killing anything else? I'm pretty happy with my yard but I do have some crabgrass issues I can't seem to get a handle on short of just pulling it out by hand.

Scott's Turf Builder Triple Action has worked for me - but it's pre-emergence, so you better get down fast. The pre-emergent killers won't work once the weed is at the surface.

@zarnold56

If you can pick it up, the quarrys on the north side of 35/80 and in Booneville sell 2” for 29/ton and 1” for 25/ton. They’ll just load a truck bed and scale you out. They have other rock options as well.

You guys could do what we did; break up the marriage so the problem (in our case, the guy) moves out.

This is Jimlad material, but seriously it went from terrible neighbors to great neighbors when they got a divorce and he moved out. She tried to tackle what he was too lazy to do for a couple of years then got a service. I was sorry when she ended up moving out several years later, but I scored good neighbors again. Luckily even though there has been a lot of turnover in the neighborhood the neighbors on the other side of us have been there longer than we have (actually original owners of the house) and the ones across the street have been there just a little longer than we have. You can deal with a lot in the neighborhood when you have good neighbors immediately next to you.

This map showed low to mid 30s earlier in the week so I was confused when he said 55 as well. It’s not going anywhere either. Nothing but cold rain in the 10 day forecast.

This is at 4 inches though. I don’t know **** about lawn care so maybe it’s taken at a shallower depth?

Shallower is fine, 4 inches is just showing off......

I'm getting clover and creeping Charlie as well

Quinclorac is about the only thing easily available to you for post emergent control. Some of the cocktails at the big box store will say crabgrass right on the front along with other chems. They work but you might have to hit a plant twice, 2 weeks apart. There won't be any crabgrass right now in Iowa so if you think you have it, it's actually another weed and probably something much worse........

We lost a lot of grass under a couple of trees a few years ago. IIRC, we didn't do a good job of raking and the grass underneath got really weak. The next year was very dry and it just withered away. Now, we have mostly dirt under the trees. We had them "overseed" the yard last year and some new grass grew, but not very much.

Any recommendations (funny and serious ones welcome)?

Turf grass won't grow as well in shade. Choose a tall fescue blended for shade and make sure you water often even after establishment. Trim the tree to allow more sunlight penetration. Tree roots rob the soil of moisture compounding the shade problem.

Our backyard is overall pretty solid, but random patches are more of a dark green, and growing faster than the rest. That grass amounts to probably a third or so of the yard. 1) Should I try to get the rest of it to look like that, or try to get the dark/fast stuff to look like the rest? 2) How do I go about doing that?

The dark fast growing stuff seems thicker/better looking, but the way it is patchy/growing so fast makes the overall yard look kind of crappy. We do have 2 dogs, but these patches don't coincide with where they crap/pee or anything.
