In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

I'm really not sure. I was only in Ames for 3 years and never knew the place existed until the tail end of my time there. I don't think the place was open for very long as this particular Italian place before the owner realized people weren't driving outside of west Ames for dinner. That's what he made it sound like at least.
I think Angie's right that it was the same guy that owned Oddfellow's and upon further research I think it was called Pazessco's.

The west end used to have some pretty good places, the red Barn just north of 30, The broiler, and the brown bottle (maybe?) both those buildings are still there. Heck the old Wallaby's by Hy vee was good also.

I was struggling to find it via googling - thank you, that was driving me nuts. I knew it was Italian, but couldn't think what it was.

How exactly do Italian places keep s***ting the bed in Ames? GeAngelo's is currently the longest-running, but it's had several owners? +39 is doing great, but I think they are doing so because it's more of a date night destination.

Black Market was after my time in Ames but I heard it was pretty good, just to high priced and not well run. Didn't they try to open a 2nd location fairly quickly? Wish I got to try it. I wish wish we had a nice deep dish option around the metro (and I know the 2 places that will be mentioned and they both are mediocre at best).
Rosati's and Wig and Pen?

I'll give an honorable mention in this thread to "The Shrine". For years, so many stories told, dead daughters, shotguns, etc, but over the last few years the truth has leaked out.

Which is? I haven’t heard that yet.

The guy ran us down and laid into us just for standing out in the road looking at it. That was a goofy experience.

Well from the last few stories when they actually talked to him and neighbors, he's just a good old guy who doesn't do technology, came from Florida where he learned that style of architecture, and built it as a hobby. He only moved to Iowa as the land was donated to him.

I forgot The Broiler, it was really good but I only went there once being a poor student and all. I had a Richie Rich frat friend who was president or king or something of his frat. When his girlfriend was student teaching, he took me to frat “couple” things. He got me steak at The Broiler and looked slightly mortified when I was too full to eat it all and got a box. It was so good, I parceled out bites to friends in the dorm lol.

My anorexic roommate used to buy Jelly Bellies at some gift store on SW corner of Lincoln and Welch. She ate one per day. Can’t remember the name of that place either.

Grubsteak could be fun but I prefer Cafe B in that location.
