Cousins to Vikings rumor

I guess we can change the thread title now!

Why are Vikings fans so polarized by this signing? Yeah it's a lot of money but the front office thinks this guy can help win a Super Bowl or they wouldn't have gone through with it.
There's some people that are upset with his stats/record, but they mostly seem to fail to put those numbers in context with the team around him. Personally, I'm pretty happy about it. I think the price is steep (and lol being fully guaranteed, other [better] QBs have to love that reality now), but it's clear to me that the FO said "we're going for it all right now". I can appreciate that confidence.

It's a lot of money, but 29 year old franchise QBs rarely hit the open market. And I expect Rodgers to get well pain soon too, unless he gives the Pack a home town discount. The price for big time QBs will continue to go up for sure.

The vast majority of Vikings fans love this move. The only negative NFL press is the guaranteed money, I don't think the fans care if the Wilfs want to spend it.

I don't think Rodgers is going to give any kind of discount. He's flat out said he doesn't like the way this offseason has been handled, specifically with some of the personnel that has been let go. He's not going to leave Green Bay, or anything like that, but I don't think he's going to give them any kind of discount.

Discounts only make sense in the NBA where one or two guys can change an entire team. Giving up a few million to guarantee a Finals run is worth it. Yeah, the QB is the most important position, but we've seen time and time again without other pieces a great QB doesn't matter that much. Giving up a few million for 1 of 22 guys on the field is a gamble. It's a totally different risk. I'm sure there are guys aging out of the league who want to stay put for more personal reasons, though.

As a life long Vikings fan I fully expect Cousin's shoulder to explode for some bizarre reason within the next 3 months

I've heard some Vikes fans upset that they might nothave the cap room to resign some defensive starters, but that may be a trade off you make to get the right QB.

It's the most important position in the game.

in a couple years after Brady and Ben are gone

AFC:
Tannehill
Taylor
Flacco
Dalton
Luck
Watson
Bortles
Mariotta
Carr
Mahomes
Rivers (if he hasn't retired)
Keenum

NFC:
Dak
Wentz
Smith
Stafford
Rodgers
Trubisky
Newton
Brees (maybe retired)
Ryan
Winston
Wilson
Jimmy G
Goff
Cousins

I know what conference I'd rather be in.
Well obviously in the conference that has 4 teams without quarterbacks rather than the conference with only 2 teams without QBs.

The Vikings are in great shape for this coming season. After next season Hunter, Kendricks, Barr and Diggs are free agents. If they lose 1-2 of those guys it would hurt but not be the end of the world.

Diggs and Barr would be pretty big losses. If they can resign those two it shouldn't be horrible. Would Vikings fans be comfortable with Treadwell or another guy taking over the Diggs' role?

This will be the make or break year for Treadwell. He was drafted because of his catch-radius, so if he can’t produce under Cousins then he needs to be cut loose. Diggs would be great to re-sign, but I think he’s going to be a victim of his own success: when the best two WR on the roster are a 5th rounder and an undrafted player then the temptation is there to let Diggs walk for more money elsewhere and hope to draft another diamond in the rough. Either that or sign a veteran to a shorter contract (and there’s a lot of great WR candidates in next years free agent pool). I’m actually more worried about replacing Sherels on PR/KR than finding another WR.

Even with Cousins, Vegas would still have the Vikes behind Philly and NE. With him, however, they might move up to third place ahead of the Steelers.

Vegas did move the Vikes up. NE is 5:1, Philly 17:2, and MN is 9:1.
