Marial Shayok Commits to ISU

A few points:

1. No one is crowning next years team Big 12 champs. To say that roster isnt capable of competing for one however is misguided.

2. Solomon Young will see MAJOR minutes next year. To say otherwise is just crazy.

3. I'll put our top three next year up there with anyone else in the Big 12 (Shayok, Wigginton, Lard). None of those McD AA for KU will have a game as polished as a 22 year old Shayok. I think the real question is how good can our next 3-4 be (Babb, Young, THT, Jacobsen, etc...).

4. To have a legit shot to take the crown from KU I think we are a high major impact transfer away.

They simply would have to have one of the most amazing one year turnarounds in Big 12 history to challenge for a championship next year. They will likely finish in the bottom 2 this year.

I personally think our 3-pt % will improve as the season goes on.

(1)DJ has been in a slump but will only go up from here.
(2)Lewis, Brase and Beverly cannot get any worse
(3)Babb and (4)Wigginton should get better as they adjust to the competition

Hopefully our returning guys will improve slightly for next year and Shayok can be a wash for Jackson (that may be a stretch). THT looks like he has a good stroke and can help.

I agree we need to get better next year, although we may be able to improve simply from our guys getting more experience with our offense and comfort playing with each other.
1. I mostly agree. Some could argue that his slump was just a regression back to the mean. For the season he is still shooting 41.5% from three.
2. Agreed
3. Agreed
4. I don't know if it's fair to expect more than the 42.5% 3pt% that Wigginton is putting up now.

Like how Iowa State went from last to third from Fred's first to second year.

Or Oklahoma from last year to this year?

What's everyone's thoughts on Long and Talley next year?

I don't see any talk of them getting minutes next year, maybe prime transfer candidates?

IMO only: Long is a prime transfer candidate.

As an aside, I was surprised to see no minutes for Talley vs Baylor especially with his length.

As they should. Hes extremely limited offensively and with Lard being a better rim protector and offensive player, his role should definitely diminish if Jacobson looks as good as were hearing.

What exactly has Solomon done to warrant less playing time? We might have missed the tournament last year had he not been inserted into the lineup.

He isn't going to average a double double but he is more than capable of being a starter in this league.

Also, what limited skills offensively are you talking about? I've seen him drain 3s before and he hits 15 foot jumpers all the time. I'm just confused on what games you'e been watching.

Watch Solomon play defense and bother guys inside and tell me he won't get major minutes next year.

The take on Babb also is ridiculous.

This, guys forget how effective Young's post defense is. His lateral foot movement has improved and it's hard to sit him with that. He needs to be more aggressive/assertive on offense, but maybe he's working on that. I have a hard time seeing his minutes reduced next year. He does the little things correctly.

1.) It’s not always about what you've done wrong. The best players play and if Lard and Jacobson play better than Solo than they will get more minutes. He'll already have less minutes after adding Jacobson for the shear fact that he has an added post player to compete with for minutes.

2.) He is 3-15 (20%) from the three-point line and averages only 7 points a game.

Take off the cardinal colored glasses and join reality. I appreciate what Solomon has added to this team and last year’s team, but if Jacobsen plays to the level he’s been advertised at, Solomon will absolutely play a smaller role in next year’s team. Some of you need to quit being so god damn emotional about this.

I agree with this to a point but we also need to make up for Brase and Beverly's minutes so he might not have a significant drop.

Brase is averaging 19.3 MPG and Beverly is averaging 15.0 MPG in conference. Solomon could move to the bench and still play 25 per night.

What makes you think Jacobsen is going to be so much better? This is all speculation at this point, for all we know he might be the first big off the bench and play a role similar to Brase.

The guy is from Nebraska, I don' get why everyone thinks he's gonna lead us to a Big 12 title and Soloman is now a bench warmer.

And regarding Young v. Jacobson, I believe that Prohm told CW that Jacobson would be starting this year. Now, Young looked better last game so by next year who knows. But either way, it is nice to have three legit big men.

I agree that I won't use 3 point shooting to advocate for his minutes, but it's not just about offense and while Lard gets a lot of glory for blocked shots, Solo is the best positional defender we have in the post. I don't know what Jacobsen brings to the table in that regard so I'm not going to speculate until it's a known quantity. Having another skilled post with fouls to use will likely reduce Solo's minutes and that's ok as I'd like our best 5 to not be gassed in crunch time. Beyond that, who knows?

This mentality of whatever is waiting in the wings is better than what we have is what leads to in game meltdown threads when the team doesn't match up to the mythical status people have built up in their minds. Just relax and let it play out.

It was a good segment, but the stuff about Babb seeing his role diminish was just ridiculous.

Who am I to question Jake Sullivan's analysis? About all I can do is wonder whether Sullivan has actually watched very many games. Of course Babb could do more, but he is my MVP because of what he has done to make others better. For instance, Wigginton isn't Wigginton this year without Babb being Babb.

Regardless of who starts next year(I'll still say it' 90% Solomon), to say he will have a diminished role and now only come off the bench for 15 minutes is crazy talk.

I don' think some of you realize how important he is on defense and rebounding.
