Marial Shayok Commits to ISU

I believe he also dropped that Lard and Wigginton might be the only guys from this years team that get major minutes next year.

If you don't want to listen to the whole hour, go to the 24:30 mark, it starts with a question from Chris about how the schedule is shaping up for ISU and what it might do to Lard and Wigginton if they get beat down.

Babb/Wigginton/Lard/Young will all be major contributors next year. Bank on it.

In that podcast they talked about Babb being intelligent and steady but criticized him a little because they questioned his ability to create and get into the lane. I understand their point, but I also think that Babb has been limited from the tendonitis in his knee. They didn't mention that.

I think he can get to the lane more than he does, I just don’t think he’s aggressive enough.

We are so much harder to guard when he is scoring, and he just needs to recognize that he's often the best option. With his quickness and ability to elevate, he's essentially unguardable 1 on 1 from 12-18' (a great example would be that late 18 footer against Baylor). I'd love to run 10 plays a game with the specific intent of getting him the shot, because he doesn't shoot enough, and I'd guess half of his shots are late shot clock, have to shoot it takes.

I think they talked about him. Even CSP has said Jacobson could be a starter next year. Sounds like everyone is not sold on that but you have to worry about his development at times. Maybe he can make an Ejim like jump before next season.

Young has already made improvements to his game since last year, especially on offense. Seems like he makes a different type of shot each game. Starting to hit short turnarounds and jump hooks. Still not my #1 choice to take a 3 down the stretch

NWB and Wigginton would be much better going to the basket if we had more deadly shooters around them, both to open up the lane (and make open corner kicks easy for them if teams sell out by clogging the lane in order to stop them driving at them). Lard and Young are nice to have on the boards, but neither draws guys very far away from the basket.

I imagine we are going to play afterburners fast next year. Prohm will have two great point guards, around eight men that he trusts at the Big 12 level (which he has never had before), 40 fouls to give, and a comparative lack of "pieces" (i.e., shooters, good post-up guys) who generally are the making of a good half-court offense. On the other hand, he is going to have a lot of those hybrid wing types that are so deadly in transition and streaking to the hoop.

We get the ball next year, and we are going to go. Teams are going to have to surrender on the offensive glass to even have a chance of slowing it down.

Jake sullivan was saying that Young’s minutes will diminish likely next year as well. Also said the a staff member told him next years team may be one of the better ones we’ve had.

As they should. Hes extremely limited offensively and with Lard being a better rim protector and offensive player, his role should definitely diminish if Jacobson looks as good as were hearing.

What about the second part: Were they stating their personal opinion, or what seems to be a general consensus around the team?

I promise I am not trying to be a ****, just trying to understand what you have heard.

Not really sure but seems like a general consensus since I've heard it from more than one person

If somehow Young or Babb are relegated to bench players, we're going to be VERY good. Don't see it happening at all, though. Young is underrated for what he does for us on the floor. Everyone's minutes may decline some due to depth, but Young and Babb are the most experienced players on the team, and it's heart and soul. Sullivan is just talking.

I agree that it wouldn't bother me a bit if he was more aggressive, but I'll also say that he's about the least of my concerns. He's halfway through his first season of getting significant minutes while learning a new position and as someone else mentioned, I don't think he's 100%. He's got to walk the line of when to distribute and when to take over himself and the fan base is spoiled after coming off 4 years of a point guard that basically always made the right decision.

To Jake Sullivan's statement, I think it's asinine to think Babb is going to fight for minutes when he's the only player we'll have returning that's played the point at the college level. He'll probably be the most important player we have returning next season...he ain't sitting on the bench. That said, he probably won't average 38 minutes/game, which is fine.

My takeaways:

1. Fair criticism of Babb by Sullivan... he definitely could/should be more aggressive about taking his man off the bounce. He's shooting just over 32% from 3 but like Pride pointed out, it seems like that percentage is lower because he is often the one launching the contested jumper when the shot clock gets low. If he keeps improving on his current trajectory I don't believe calling him a top 15-20 point guard in the country next year is that bold of statement.

2. Do not agree that Solomon won't be able to find minutes next year. Shayok will be a high high impact player but while I expect Jacobson to do some nice things, I don't see him being a 30+ minute a night guy like Sullivan said.

3. Encouraging to hear the staff is as excited about the 2018 guys as the fan base. Sounds like they believe THT and Zion will have immediate impacts although I would like to see Terrence Lewis step up and be that consistent outside shooting threat we lack.

Babb will start and play major minutes. Hopefully he doesn't have to play on-ball 36+ min/game like he is now. Wigginton will likely be able to take 10 min at the PG spot, plus THT will handle the ball more too. That should actually help Babb be better defensively.

Young will play major minutes too. Hopefully Jacobson is as good as some people are saying, but either way we'll have enough minutes for all 3 post players.

We have to remember that all of the DJ/Brase/Beverly minutes will be available. Plus the minutes that Long/Talley/Lewis are playing will be up for grabs as well.

I see something like:

Babb 32
Shayok 32
Wigginton 32
Lard 25
Young 20
Jacobson 20
THT 20

Lard's moves in the post aren't always pretty but he's been quite effective and efficient down low in addition to his abilities to run the floor and offer rim protection

This team is shooting 35% on 3PA. That would be the worst mark since 2008-09.
So you think we'll be worse again next year compared to this year? That's the point I was making, we aren't going to see that number decline again next year.

Agreed, Lard is a nice piece there -- but it is all energy, spring, and relentlessness in going after his own misses on the offensive boards less than just squaring a guy up and faking him out of his sneakers like Georges could do all day long.

He is better in chaos, not in an organized half-court that teams have made us play and frustrated us in the past, like UNI always does or UVA did in Chicago.

Lard is going to be the perfect run-and-gun 5 to go with our wings.

I personally think our 3-pt % will improve as the season goes on.

-DJ has been in a slump but will only go up from here.
-Lewis, Brase and Beverly cannot get any worse
-Babb and Wigginton should get better as they adjust to the competition

Hopefully our returning guys will improve slightly for next year and Shayok can be a wash for Jackson (that may be a stretch). THT looks like he has a good stroke and can help.

I agree we need to get better next year, although we may be able to improve simply from our guys getting more experience with our offense and comfort playing with each other.

At this point it seems like they are much different players to compare. Jackson is a streaky shooter that can be a pretty good defender, he doesn't offer too much for assists, rebounds and slashing.

Shayok seems to be a bit more well-rounded. Can shoot (though probably not as good as Jackson), drive, rebound and guard multiple positions.

I do think that Shayok can be a 13point 5 rebound guy that can shoot around 38-40% from deep.
