Hurricane Harvey

Pretty sure the town with the mayor told citizens to write their SSN is Rockport - which is pretty well destroyed. They pulled emergency dispatch off last night so yeah, when buildings started collapsing with people in them, help wasn't on the way.

NWS in Houston issued more than 30 tornado warnings today - their most ever. And that's not the main danger of this storm. It's the water. Parts of Houston are getting 3-4 inches of rain PER HOUR right now. Some spots even at 5-6. There's some bayou in the Houston area that the water level rose five feet in 26 minutes.

And the storm is going to continue to dump this amount of rain for the next several DAYS.

Your opinion is stupid and you should feel bad.

I'm glad a blizzard doesn't absolutely crush you but what about the people 30 miles away in the viewing area who do get crushed? Is that too much hype?

I'd rather have my conservative estimate be what I put out to the public than end up looking foolish because I thought it could maybe miss and then end up with a bunch of people unprepared. Anyone who ignores the warnings put out is just taking part in natural selection.

Was just listening to a weather dude on CNN going over the rain forecast for Houston. Damn. :eek:

Also wondering how there are not more casualties in Rockport considering the number of folks that reportedly were going to "ride it out".

Think about that persons goal.
Think about the worst case scenario of a storm like this.
Then put the pieces together.

Port Aransas mayor told local news that he had been told 8 fatalities - but that doesn't seem to be entirely confirmed. Several dozen missing in the area though. I think it's really that they haven't been able to get out and do much to this point.

New Orleans sits over a foot below sea level. A foot...below. By comparison, the average elevation relative to sea level for the land impacted by Harvey is around 10 feet above.

Harvey is a stronger storm than Katrina was. Location is what made Katrina.

I don't have a dog in the race because I don't really care, but I'd imagine the time it matters is what it is when it hits landfall and does damage, not what it is 200 miles out in the ocean where the only thing it's effecting is fish.

I know when I lived in Hawaii it was based on what it was at landfall, but maybe they do it different in the Pacific than the Atlantic, and more importantly, I don't care enough to do the research.

Speaking of fish, do hurricanes actually even affect fish? Seems like once you get under the surface of the water, its calm and peaceful regardless of what its doing on top.
