Big Man Recruiting - Prohm's luck will change

People appreciate good offense over good defense that's for sure

People appreciate winning mostly. Right now we look like a bubble team with zero top 50 wins.

Get a couple resume building wins, and I don't care if we aren't breaking 50.

To summarize the OP's first post...

Prohm's post recruiting will improve because of..... mean reversion

Our schedule has been really soft so far. I agree it's way better than it's been for the past several years, and they play hard, but we won't have a top 25 defense for long now that we're in conference play.

That's adjusted.

That's adjusted.
It has an adjustment, which has flaws when the question isn't based in effort or coaching, but natural ability. It still has a lot of irrelevant possessions in the data set when talking about where our defense will end up in Big 12 play, and more specifically if it's good enough.

We give good effort and are better coached, a big improvement over Fred's teams. But how good are we? Imo in terms of winning enough games, particularly when it comes down to the end of games, our upside on that end is just as limited as on offense.

This is a carbon copy of threads that appeared on hawk boards about their recruiting.

when you look at other programs and what they have for bigs, yes, yes it is like going to the grocery store and grabbing one off the shelf. In the context of college basketball, there are plenty of them that are better than anything we have. Just watch games over the weekend, every school has them, especially P5. We are woefully short in this area compared to most schools. Granted, we have better guards than most schools. It ticks me off when I see programs that don't have a basketball culture and play in front of 4,000 fans and they have 2 or 3 bigs that I would love to have. Heck, did you see Northwestern vs Iowa? Each school had at least 2 guys off of each roster I would to have. Nebraska who has never won an NCAA tournament game has better bigs than us.

Your rite about one thing...when our b-ball program is lagging behind Nebraska re Bigs....well that doesnt say much for Prohm now does it.......

The nancys on this board seem to think getting a skilled big is like going to the grocery store and grabbing one off the shelf - especially because Fred left nothing in that category then bolted very late in the recruiting cycle to allow CDP to actually FIND a guy still left on the shelf to recruit.

But we lost a game on the road yesterday to a coach with a BIG time resume so CSP sucks...

I don't think most people think getting a skilled big is like going to the grocery store.....

I do think people would agree that if you get two guys to transfer in (for a one and done) at least one of them should contribute....something. Holden/Bowie played 13 minutes against Kansas and tallied as many points and rebounds as I did.

If you watched that game yesterday and didn't come away from it saying we are going to get destroyed on the inside by even the most average big guy you're wishing. We need size and size that can at a minimum defend. I agree CFH left at a horrible time for CP but I also understand the frustration of watching an undersized PF try to play the 5.

Well we're way better than Nebraska so...
Yes, people look at these middling teams that have not been and are not all that good, see that they have a serviceable or even good post player and fail to see there is a pretty big opportunity cost for recruiting and developing enough of these bigs to get one to be good.

Blue bloods can fill out there classes in a position balanced way. We have to focus recruiting to get the maximum talent on campus. We can get guards and wing players here that can match similar talent with anybody. Hopefully you land a Lard and Young type of guy each year and maybe every 2-3 years a Stokes. When you have a hole due to a Malou situation or another reason you try to fill the holes with transfers, offset with style of play, etc.
it just seems like this is the most economical approach to recruiting and roster building.

Say what you will about Prohm but this team would look a lot different right now if Malou and Lard both were here playing. Those two along with Young were his bigs inside. Malou would have been your stretch 4...Young and Lard play the 5. Burton could then play more small forward and that would make us a "bigger" team that could bang with the big boys.

Don't give up on Prohm yet. I think he knows what he wants to do...he just hasn't got the pieces yet. Next year is going to be rebuilding year but after that I believe we will be a very good team again.

Lard is another freshman big. I don't think the rotation would be much different even if he was eligible. Malou is the real wildcard.

I wouldn't disagree with that but taking specific plays late in games and pointing to them as a sign of failure in that area of the game isn't accurate. We have decent perimeter defense but if you get past that, we don't have much unless it's Deonte sending one three rows deep. If we would have played perimeter defense last year like we do this year, with McKay, we would have been a really good defense.

If I were Prohm I would have tried a lot more stuff last night. My goal would have been to make Self sit Lucas even though I think Self has learned that you have to fight back on that. Tell Deonte to take him to the rim every time down until it's either not working or he's is foul trouble. When Bragg comes in, do the same. Make them go small or make them pay. I also would have played Young and Bowie a little more, taken less risks on those lobs and tried to get those bigs to turn it over down low because I don't think either is a very good passer. My last resort would have been going ultra small without Burton to try and make it a track meet because even though our offense hasn't been quite as good, those guys can all still run. I guess I just felt like Prohm chose death by 1000 papercuts and while we had a chance to win, it was going to be tough with their consistent success inside.

I can't prove this but I think we're a top 10, potentially top 5 team with him. It's hard to believe he isn't the difference in a lot of our losses. He changes this whole team.

I feel like the "plodder" thing is overplayed and a convenient excuse for our failures in recruiting big men.

People now assume that because we ran circles around Notre Dame in the tourney a few years back, that big men are horrible and unnecessary. And forgetting we had a NBA stretch 4 (currently don't have one) and two really high level SF's (Hogue + Ejim) who played bigger than they look.

IMO there are plenty of big men out there that don't move like slugs.

The way Prohm seems to want to play..... by playing defense and more of a half court offense, could really benefit by having a big man or two. Young will be good, but he's kind of the bare minimum in terms of size for the team Prohm's trying to become.

If Lard is as good or better than Young, and/or we land another high level big man, then we may have a chance.

Haven't read the whole thread to see if this has already been addressed, however this is incorrect. Prohm has historically played fast with defense at his other stops and his constant mantra in the off season was that we have to play faster and still faster yet. They haven't played as fast as they want to partly because they need all five bodies on the defensive board because they can't secure rebounds. If they could afford two guards breaking when the shots went up because they could rebound with three hitting the boards you would see truly fast offense.

We'll find out next year - if he doesn't give us much it probably wouldn't have made a difference.
