Random Thoughts VIII: The Ocho

Doing research this morning, I've read letters from 4 different reformers. I'm glad that the handwriting is getting more readable letter by letter, but whining that there should have been some kind of standard along the way.

None of these people bothered to think about me at all. Dorks.
There will come a day when people won't be able to read the old documents at all - we'll need scribes as cursive is no longer being taught in many places. It's a lost art.

During parent teacher conferences, my daughter's teacher informed us that my daughter was the only kid in her class turning in assignments written in cursive. I asked if that was ok, and she said that she loved that she was challenging herself.

Her handwriting isn't great (she's my kid) but it is decidedly better than mine already.

We watched Queen of Katwe over the weekend. It was based on a true story about a Ugandan girl raised in poverty that learned chess and the impact it had on her life. It was a really solid movie for kids around 8-14. My daughter learned how fortunate we are compared to other parts of the world and, bonus, she also asked me to teach her chess.

That looks like a good movie, my 11yr old would probably enjoy it. Her third grade teacher taught her how to play, he also runs a chess club at school for grades 3-5.

That's a non-issue. You just teach reading cursive as a research tool. Easy class to teach and to take. Everything will drive right along.
Don't get me wrong - cursive had its time & place and teaching it now may well be a waste of time. I like your idea of teaching it as a research tool. I'm just sad to see it go. I have all of the letters my father wrote me in college - he had beautiful handwriting.

My handwriting for the most part is a weird mashup for cursive and print, but I would be sad to see cursive go out entirely.

The folks with really good handwriting are a rare prize.

One of the guys I study has 4 different styles of handwriting, and I think his depends on his volatile moods. That dude could have used a lot of help. Maybe we travel back and show these people the way?

Monday morning giggles!

Add me in the group with terrible handwriting. By the time HS rolled around I had given up on it improving. Protip-someone with bad handwriting doesn't want you to comment on it. They know it. Work together to figure out what it says and move on.

If I've learned anything from Keanu Reeves it's that when students need to travel back in time to learn about history they should use one of these.

Also, this seemed more appropriate than a flux capacitor since you used the word dude.

My handwriting I'd say is rather well, but I write in all Caps which is apparently really weird and annoying to people

Post the book report if you can find it!
That's gotten more difficult the last couple years.
