That's because you were probably never taught cursive.
Most people nowadays refer to their printing as "handwriting", so you're not alone there.

We learned cursive in 2nd & 3rd grade and never used it after that.
We practiced it all the way up. Our papers in Jr high were written in cursive...points off for printing. I think they finally let go of it in high school.

My 4th grader had an assignment where they were asked to write, in cursive, in PEN. He had a lot of scribbles because he's a perfectionist, but his cursive looked really good.
He told me it took him forever because he had to look up at the cursive letter sign to see how to write most of the letters. They don't practice it any more. I think his teacher just wanted to challenge them.
Now, for everyday writing, my boy prints and prints terribly. Just like his old man. He tries to write as fast as his brain works, and that's just too fast for legibility.
