Random Thoughts VIII: The Ocho

I'm pretty sure I have at least one, but like most of my books, packed away. But hey, we have a children's library of several hundred books all at our fingertips.

A little caustic comment but seriously, getting the kids to read is the most important thing ever.

I'm legitimately impressed with some of the challenging content of the children's books. It feels like there's a better bridge between the Little Golden Books and adult reading material than there was when I was growing up.

On what planet is a pickup truck a reasonable option for a loaner car for a short-legged, out-of-shape 61 year old woman??????

Or opposite end of the spectrum...a Toyota Yaris to a 6'3" 65 yo man. As my niece said when she saw it "Awww...a baby car!"

In sixth grade I was 5'3-1/2", and the tallest kid in my class (boy OR girl). I am now (barely) 5'2". There is no justice.

5' in 4th grade, 5'10" by 8th grade, then a half inch growth each year in HS.

I wonder if I still have a couple of those Calvin and Hobbes collections. Haven't read them in years and years. It would almost be like reading them anew.

"Scientific progress goes 'Boink!'?"

I get to sleep in tomorrow, but my next paycheck is gonna suck. Very conflicted.

I absolutely agree with this. For me growing up, it seemed like your choices were Sports Non-fiction or Laura Ingels Wilder.

I don't remember the books I read, I hated to read. When I got to HS, all the teachers told my mom that they could tell I read all the time. She smiled and never said anything. One teacher suspected it when we had to check back in our textbooks and the book bind crackled like it was the first time it had been opened.

I think I went from Goodnight Moon to Watership Down

My boys were raiding MY bookshelf in second or third grade. One went for the spy novel section (we both loved the Brotherhood of the Rose series) and the other dove into the supernatural section (the Necromancer series). They were never really interested in "kid books"...

When I was a kid I read the standard The Hardy Boys and The Happy Hollisters and anything horror.

Now I just don't read much at all even though I know I should.

That's one thing I have no problem spending money on for my boys. They have tons of books and read every night. They've done great on their standardized reading tests in school as a result.

An added bonus is that reading calms them down before bed and they usually sleep like babies. Except when one of them decides he wants to sneak into the other's bed. Then I have to intervene.

I read all of the Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, etc. and even most of Nancy Drew series. I couldn't get enough reading but I was still outside just about every chance I could get.

Yup - our shopping trips would culminate with a book purchase at least 50% of the time...a better reward for good behavior than ice cream in their eyes. :)
