Morels?

I'll agree that it's hard to beat a good steak, but morel mushrooms are a delicacy that only appear in the wild for a few weeks each year. Then they're gone. And they're not exactly easy to find, either. This is the only time you'll get to find them and eat them fresh for the whole year. And they are delicious when fried. Fresh crappie + morel mushrooms + cold beer = close to Heaven.

I wouldn't pay $50/lb myself, but a pound of mushrooms is actually quite a bit and there are people that will pay it.

Careful with the beer + morels. Might end up spending a day in the restroom.

We went for 4 hours yesterday in southeast Iowa. Some of our best spots need another week or two. We found just enough to sample them. All greys, no yellows

A wild mod appears!

Maybe it's just me, but I've never seen you here before!

Moved/changed job position 6 years ago and have been mostly inactive. I started the first year in 2006. I do miss being on the here more than I can be.

My favorite spring meal is fresh crappie and morels. Cooked differently.

My kids texted that they are coming home with fish and morels for dinner, and have promised they are cleaning the fish themselves. Better be. Doubt they got crappie in the pond they were going to though.

Found a ton last weekend near Churchtown. This guy was the prize.

Went turkey hunting last week around Dubuque. Found enough both greys and yellows for a couple meals with my folks. Not enough to bring home though.

Boys found some yellows still in southern Iowa at a kid's grad party Sunday so guessing there might still be a few near Ankeny.
