Fritz Denies Interest

It's true he never really says anything about not being interested, and with a couple games left it doesn't surprise me to keep that kind of talk quiet.
I'm just really high on this guy, I think it could be a match made in heaven. Campbell is my 2nd choice, but I just feel like Fritz is a safer hire.

Fritz might be a safer hire. Campbell would have a higher ceiling IMO.

Sounds like the argument for SR at QB this year with Lanning having the higher ceiling.

Campbell also took over a pretty good football team.

A team that Campbell helped build. And now Campbell has taken them to a higher level. Campbell was hired as Head Coach in December 2011. Campbell arrived in Toledo with Beckman in 2009. When Beckman left then Campbell was elevated to Head Coach.

So Campbell has signed 4 full recruiting classes. And he was present for the 3 previous recruiting classes as he was Offensive Coordinator.

Beckman has not done well since leaving Toledo. Campbell has done great since Beckman left. Is this a Boise State type situation where Hawkins took all the credit and it was likely that Chris Petersen was the key?

Georgia southern leads nation in rushing. There D is top 30ish. Not bad for Georgia Southern. I agree Campbell has higher upside but my concerns still remain. He took over a very good, established Toledo program. 2014 we were awful and we beat Toledo...this year we actually destroyed them. Toledo has done well this year as a product of a bad MAC year IMO.

Yes he did. And Campbell was instrumental in building that team as he came on board when Beckman did. Beckman leaves and sucks at his next job. Meanwhile Campbell stays and is elevated to Head Coach and 4 years later the team is even better than they were under Beckman.

IMO, it looks like Campbell is the common denominator amongst all the teams at Toledo. The guy has won everywhere he has been. Plus this year's Toledo team is Campbell recruits.

I think Campbell would be a fine choice. All coaches have concerns I guess. Toledo is not a hard place to win at. They are always top in MAC. Beckmann failed at Illinois because he was a ****. He recruited fairly well at Illinois.

Campbell does seem like a players type coach. My only concern is he can't come in thinking that he can build this program with just HS kids. I'm warming up to him. We could do worse no doubt

Campbell actually is looking more impressive. Since 2012 Toledo has lost 13 games...8 of those where by a TD or less. They've beaten Arkansas...twice...ISU..played mizzou down to wire few years ago when mizzou was real good.

If he helped to establish that team, the concern there would be a lot less for me.

We do have some young talent for the coming year. IMO, if you can get HS kids and develop them and not have attrition and recruiting busts then you are better off with the 5 years you get from those recruits rather than the 2 years you get from the Juco's.

Our need for Juco's was more about the misses we had on our HS kids. We had to shore up our classes. So we were in constant catch up mode.

Losing a bunch of close games isn't a good thing. If it was, Rhoads wouldn't have been fired.

Best available, but I agree a good development program should end up reducing that ending up being jucos. Always room for guys like Tucker and Thomas.

Looks like Matt Campbell has 35 wins and 14 losses at Toledo. Doesn't sound like a "bunch of close games lost". Sounds like a pretty damn good record. And the losses that were suffered were close.

In other words, it appears that Matt Campbell wins most of the time and when he does happen to lose, the games are close.

YES. That is a good thing.

Of course, he is at Toledo. That is like having a good record in the Big 12 as Nebraska.

Campbell's resume passes the test. He's been a D1 head coach and successful. The rest needs to be found out in the interview. Does he have the vision to turn this program into a winner? I have no idea. None of us have any idea regarding any candidate.

One area that Campbell does not apparently have much experience in is with "national" recruiting. His football team is very "Ohio-centric". Most of his team is from Ohio and its neighboring states. Recruiting at Iowa State would be much different than what he has had to do at Toledo.

This is something I wonder about also. This doesn't mean that he/someone else on his staff can't recruit on a national level. If we were in Ohio, Texas, etc. the bulk of our commits would be in-state too.
