Fritz Denies Interest

JP knows he will work for cheap.

I don't think that is the basis for any of these coaches. IMO, if we could get that homerun experienced successful football coach that would be an obvious choice, then I believe we would pay out the big money.

But it is pretty stupid to just throw $3 million bucks at any candidate just to pay him a big salary. IMO, we will pay the amount of money necessary to get the coach that we want that wants to come to Iowa State.

We will probably pay the new coach at least as much or more than CPR was making.

Maybe we should hire Fritz and give him $7 million per year and that will make us national champs.......at being stupid. But we won't be called "cheap".

Maybe this is a dumb question but if he wants to leave GS why Iowa State and not the other 13 open ones? If he is so good and a proven winner don't you think other P5 schools would call him?

Southern Cal, Miami and VT are probably going for bigger names. That leaves 10 out of 13.

Hawaii, North Texas and Louisiana Monroe are probably not in the 2 million dollar coach league just yet. That leaves 7 out of 13.

South Carolina was reportedly having Herman dreams until very recently. In any case, there's probably pressure to replace a name like Spurrier with another big time name. That leaves 6

Maryland supposedly wants Justin Fuente. We're down to 5.

Syracuse seems to have identified Frost, Riley, Orgeron, Mike Sanford. We seem determined not to go after the assistant coach route. 4 schools left.

Illinois likes its interim coach Cubit, and is considering him for a permanent position. Three schools left.

Central Florida wants an SEC assistant according to articles from the last 2-3 days. Two schools left: Missouri and Iowa State.

Fritz would probably be a good fit for both. But Mizzou has an ego. Thry probably believe they can get a Tom Herman type of guy,

I think that's a pretty fair on-the-spot assessment of things. I think things are a little too cloudy at Illinois at the moment to say for sure which way that will go, but given their AD position is up in the air and so many jobs open, I can see them keeping their interim coach until things are more settled in C-U. Missouri really is the most likely competition for Fritz, but he would be a fallback for them. I think they want to give Les Miles every reason to say no first, which buys ISU a little time to consider Fritz if that's who Pollard really wants. Fritz might be wise to wait on MU, but might not either, if he has a Big 12 offer in hand he really has to take it at 50+ years of age.

He could probably do a lot better. Georgia could open up soon.

Need a recruiter coach. A closer. Nit a Frank Solich.

I think we go after Matt Campbell hard. IMO, we pay at least $2 million to $2.5 million base salary with a lot of incentives. IMO, he is probably the best fit and would definitely excite the fan base. Iowa State has a Toledo connection with some of our coaches. I see this happening. Campbell would get a great nucleus of young talent to build around. He is 35 years old and he could make quite a name for himself with success at Iowa State.

Reports are big on Justin Fuente to Virginia Tech. Also, Illinois is likely to fire Bill Cubit per Football Scoop. At the least, you've dismissed Maryland and Illinois - probably the most comparable positions to Iowa State in this search - when they are probably still in the mix.

Not at all saying that we shouldn't be able to get Fritz if we want him but your post is a pretty significant oversimplification of the landscape

If he is not interested why are their random stories out there tying him to the job? I am sure JP isn't putting that out there.

Great take. Matt Campbell has known nothing but winning, and would be a fantastic hire. He was born in Massillon, Ohio, famous for high school football, and home to one of the first professional football teams (pre-dating the NFL). He played for 3 national titles at DIII Mount Union, and went on to coach the DL there for 2 more. He worked his way up the ranks at Toledo over the course of 7 years. Yes, he is young, but is no flash in the pan.

An interesting footnote: Massillon, Ohio and Ames Iowa are connected by the Lincoln Highway, a.k.a. Lincoln Way. Lincoln Way in Ames is literally the same street that goes directly through Massillon, Ohio.

Of course my post is an over simplification of a situation involving many variables, many teams and many coaches. Wasn't meant to be anything else.

As for Maryland, yes, Fuente is out of the picture. But according to more recent news, they're looking at DJ Durkin and possibly Dan Mullen. ISU isn't going to give DJ Durkin a look, and Dan Mullen isn't going to give ISU a look. I don't see Fritz being in the mix for them.

So we're left with Illinois, if Cubit is let go.

Many of the schools looking for coaches are not against hiring assistants like we are. Some of these schools obviously believe that being a top assistant in a top school in a top conference under a top HC is an acceptable way to go. We're understandably against that based on our personal experience.

You miss the point of his post - it was to demonstrate to the the "jsb-types" who are annoying everyone shouting from their rooftops that firing Rhoads was a mistake because we won't be able to replace him with a quality coach. His post was an oversimplification on purpose - to demonstrate that ISU isn't nearly in the dire position that some folks want us to believe and, unless Pollard makes a very stereotypical "We Are Iowa State" hire, we should be able to hire a quality head coach, whether it's Fritz or someone else.

Some Trivia........the last Iowa State Coach with Ohio connections.......was Earle Bruce. Earle recruited the state of Ohio hard and we got some great players from there.

Damn Woody Hayes. He changed Iowa State football history with his punch thrown in the bowl game.

IMO, Rod Carey might make the move from Northern Illinois to the Illini.

This is my top candidate - winning HC at 3 different schools, coaches different types of offense, coached in JC ranks and from the Midwest. Even if he uses ISU as a stepping stone to one of the top jobs please use us and once he has won for 3 or 4 seasons maybe at that point we find another that will look at ISU as a destination job.

I actually think Fritz would stay here until he retired if he's successful. He's 55 I believe and could see this as his final stop.

You might be right but I think the chance of the next HC staying for a long period of time should be one of the lower criteria of evaluating candidates.

Agree. You hire the best coach you can get. If that coach moves on because of success then the job is even more attractive and we have gone through a very good period of Iowa State Football.

Proven winner. Long and solid track record at HC. Ties to Kansas Juco. Ties to Texas. That's about the perfect resume if I'm JP.
