Coaching Prospects

I don't understand the love for PJ Fleck. 1 winning season. Lost 43-17 to Georgia Southern last week.

No. Craig Bohl was 4-8 last year and 0-2 this year at Wyoming. He is not the answer. Neither is Kleiman or Farley or any other FCS coach. Mark Mangino is not the answer either. We need to let the season play out. We lost a very tough game that we could have won if our offense had come out for the second half. Have to place the blame squarely on the offense. The entire offense. Offense coordinator on down. Defense played their hearts out and were down DT Demond Tucker when he went out with injury in the 2nd quarter. We had a shot to win the game repeatedly in the second half and peed down our leg offensively that whole second half. 31 plays in the second half and we gained a total of 66 yards. Pathetic. The Offense is making me long for the days of Courtney Messingham as our OC.
So we should get a really good coach from somewhere else who wants to take over a bottom feeding program and make it great? Give us your list of unicorns, so we can judge you.

This is his 3rd season and not all improvement is linear. Only a matter of time before he has them rolling. Will probably gamble and hold out for a better job but I would definitely be interested from our end.

Charlie Strong...I'd love it.

I know it has been brought up earlier in this thread but the Flexbone option offense that Coach Johnson employs at GaTech has proven all the doubters wrong. The beauty of it is that you don't need a team full of 4-5 star recruits to be successful (check). GaTech, Navy, and Ga Southern all run a variation of the Flexbone and have over the past 7 years produced winning programs. Look at Navy and now Army who runs the FBone, they can't compete recruiting wise with the Power 5 conferences. Year after year Navy gives Notre Dame fits and usually wins the Commander and Chief. If we could ever land Willie Fritz from Ga Southern or Ken Niumatalolo from Navy, those two guys would be great hires.

What is this his second year up there? You still think CPR is the right guy for this job after 3-9 and 2-10 in years 5 and 6.

We will find out. We just had a loss to Iowa. Scratch Mangino from the list of possible replacements. And I do not want Bohl. I watched DMac get more time after the debacle in 2003. Second half of the Iowa game reminded me of DMac's offense in 2003. They were atrocious. That was a 2-10 season in Year #9. And we had 4 non-conference games and played in the Big 12 North.

Yes, because he followed it up with two winning years, not a 2-10 season and whatever we are going to end up this year.

So, you're basically saying let's just go ahead and repeat a past mistake? Or are you saying because we've been bad before late in a coaches tenure it makes it okay to have it happen again? Makes sense.

DMac had 3 good years then 2003, then 2 good years, then a bad year, and then "resigned."

Rhoads is potentially on his 3rd straight bad year. I hope we turn it around this year, but if we go 3-9 or something similar, that is a much different situation.

Not to sidetrack the discussion, but a more accurate telling of this story is that McCarney followed up 2003 with two of the softest schedules Iowa State's ever seen. If we're comparing the two coaches, that should be factored in.

Still, I loved 2004/2005...those were very fun years, and I'd love to return to that.

That's fair, but I suspect if he had laid an egg in 2004 he would have been gone. We're talking about Rhoads possibly having 7 or 8 wins over 3 seasons and staying - yikes.

I really think Strong would consider coming here. If he's dumped at Texas he will have had his opportunity at a high profile Job. Honestly I don't think he has failed there either. Mack left a dumpster fire for him to clean up in terms of discipline and culture. Maybe he would consider a place at this time that he will be given a long leash and still in a p5 program.

Never said that. I said We will find out. Which we will. Pretty obvious you have no recollection of the 2004 football season. That team was only 2-4 at the beginning of the year. Using your judgement we would have pulled the trigger and fired DMac immediately. That team ended up finishing 7-5 with a bowl win. The lone loss in the last 6 games was 17-14 loss to Mizzou in OT.

And THAT is why you let the season play out. We will know at some point.

Your signature line shows your obvious bias.

I will bet you right now we end up with a better season than 2-10. Are you willing to take that bet? Name your price.
