Although I say pay someone to do your car stuff it's not like I never did car stuff. Used to do the basics on the old Nova and it was something I did with my dad. My dad was not much of a mechanic but liked doing this with me. With a small warehouse full of oil I usually got the free oil deal! Box in the trunk had oil, anti-freeze, spare thermostat, extra radiator hoses because god knows you can't drive from Manchester to Ames without all of the just in case stuff!
The old Nova had a straight six in an engine bay built for a V-8. No air conditioning. No power steering. No power brakes. Nothing but the engine running down the middle and open space on both sides. Pretty much stopped working on cars when I popped open the hood on my new '88 Honda Accord and the only thing I could recognize was the oil stick. What the hell is all of this stuff and how the hell did they cram it into this small space!
Today I can't even see the engine bay on the enclosed mid-engine Boxster.
Yup...PapaLew is mostly out of the shade-tree mechanics himself. Too many hard-to-reach and/or computerized parts.
