I don't attempt to run any more with that meniscus tear I am hoping to heal. I do swim a lot in the summer, lifeguard kids gives me a lot of access. They can all swim a mile without tiring much. I do as far as I can without dying. I finally made it to 3/4 of a mile, but one of the boys had to come save Mom to get her out of the pool because my leg was cramping so bad I couldn't step on the ladder or the side of the pool. He did give me a hard time about asking whether he should put me on the board. At least he was helping me try and push on my leg when he said it.

The rest day is important, but you need to use and move those muscles as well. If you walk around a bit, it will help loosen them up and hopefully take some of the ache away.

Agree with this. I find I'm worse after a long run if I go full couch potato than if I push through and go run errands.

Also, might be helpful to drop the pace a little, make sure you stretch and warm up a touch (ie walk a little befor you start running). Make sure you are getting a lot of water especially with the heat the Midwest has been getting.

I was given the advice that if my urine wasn't clear, I hadn't had enough water. It may not be exactly scientifically true, but I thought was good advice

I think my cramp problem is that I don't get enough salt. I don't eat many processed foods and try to season food when I am cooking with other things. I tend to get cramps unrelated to exercise as well.

im getting back into running after a year or so without it. last night i went for a mile and when i stopped i had cramps in both calfs and both quads. it basically made me never want to run again.

what can i do to keep running but not have these cramps happen? is it just because those muscles haven't been used recently? should i just keep running every day regardless of the cramps?

1. Hydrate like crazy.
2. Never jump in and just run every day. I haven't found a running program that recommends that. It's begging for an injury.
3. Understand that the heat right now is going to produce negative effects. Hydrate like crazy, and be really cautious how you push yourself.
4. Drink some chocolate milk after working out. Stuff is amazing for avoid muscular soreness.
5. Stretch some before and a lot after.
6. Hydrate like crazy.
7. In case it slips your mind, hydrate yourself.
