I've written it before...I wouldn't be upset with Fred if (and most likely when) he leaves for the Bulls, but I would also be perfectly okay with the local/state media asking him some very tough questions at the inevitable press conference. In fact, I'd be disappointed if they didn't.

Which is exactly why he probably won't have a press conference.

They end on Monday

Gotcha. Thank you for clarifying. From what I've heard this is why he's waiting. Maybe he'll announce before Monday and his kids just won't go to the last day of school. Can't blame him for thinking about them. I'm sure they'd be subject to unwanted attention from other kids.

They won't. They never ask hard questions.

Even if they do here is his answer: "Over time people and their priorities change. Coaching in Chicago isn't about wanting to get away from ISU but rather accepting a job most people in our profession can only dream about. I will always look fondly on the fans of ISU accepting me in 2010 as an unproven coach. As you are all aware, my love for ISU and Ames goes down to my core. I know the program is in great shape and I know whoever AD Pollard hires to coach will be welcomed with by the fans. This is certainly a tough time but I thank you all for the warm wishes. Go Cyclones."

I think JP has to be thinking big here... a $2-3 million splash hire is what the program needs but more importantly what it deserves. The program is in good shape, the past 4 years have been successful, it's poised to have one of the best seasons in school history potentially this coming season if things fall into place, and with the right hire combined with a potential record season upcoming the nearly empty roster for 2016-2017 could be filled with some talented recruits.

Now is not the time for JP to be shopping for bargain priced coaches at Goodwill.... he needs to go big here.
Not just this program but what Iowa State needs. 2013 football, Georges ankle, 2014 Football season, UAB, now the ultimate hope sucker our one salvation in "next year" (and beyond) is being destroyed with Hoiberg departure. We need hope or the momentum with cyclone nation Jamie built will be lost. And many of the new fans will go back to oblivion. Cyfanatic won't be so fanatical. I don't know that we need a splash but we need hope. To me that is Horny or Underwood. Otz is a solid fall back that I think will work out but we may take a step back in the process. I don't envy Jamie, feel like he is weighing this and the chance Rhoads falls flat and knows he may only have the ammo to "fix" one so is hoping that he can get a value hire with Otz. It may be the right move to plug both holes or it could sink the whole ship.

That is honestly the dumbest reason I have heard yet as to why this is dragging out. You have no sources, so don't act like you do.

Do coaches ever have a going away press conference? I can bet his new employers don't want his introduction as the Bulls coach to be an awkward going away press conference with the Iowa media.

This article makes me sick thinking that Fred is (most likely) stepping into this environment. Eff the bulls forever.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/why-bu...accept-tom-thibodeau-s-success-053816326.html

"For all the issues that inspired Chicago Bulls management to carry out such a ferocious campaign to discredit Tom Thibodeau – minutes restrictions and personnel disagreements and an inability to simply interact – perhaps the most powerful had been jealousy."

It makes little sense to me to walk into an environment like that knowing full well that it's like that.
I've walked into a couple of jobs like that without knowing that environment was waiting for me, and had plenty of regrets about it. Fred knows this is coming, because people rarely just change their approach like that.

This is a really odd decision. If anyone can make it work, Fred's the one, but I don't think anyone can make the Bulls situation work out.

Lets not act like Fred isn't giving the next guy a chance. Tons of talent on next years team and quite a few pieces for the following year. If the new guy picks up 2 solid guys for the 16-17 season or so, that team is likely going to be pretty solid still.

--- Earlier this week, a source told me to not sleep on Suns coach and former Cyclone Jeff Hornacek to possibly replace Fred Hoiberg in Ames. Today, I was told by not one but two separate sources that Hornacek is not interested in the job (reason being he isn’t crazy about the grind of the college game – recruiting, APR, etc.)

I posted this link in the other thread, but I think it bears repeating here as well. I think we have a legit shot at getting Hornacek. Just check out this quote from 2013.

"My goal was never to be a coach in the NBA," Hornacek said in 2013. "I always felt I would coach, but I thought that would be on the college level. I felt that what I'd learned over the years would be too much for high school, but the pro guys... they already know everything, so why would I do that?"

If the Suns don't extend his contract, why wouldn't he take 5 years and $10 million total to come to ISU? Sounds like he would enjoy coaching college, and he would have better job security and be paid just as well.

Something to point out to all of the "Otz has been the guy for months" crowd. Pollard wouldn't have talked to a search firm if he had his guy all along...why waste the money and effort?

Let me say this in response. If indeed it is true that Diallo was informed in early April that there was no guarantee CFH would be at ISU for the 2015 season, you would think that CFH would have said that and probably more to Otz, and yet he gave up two interviews for hc jobs and jumped at a chance to "work for someone he doesn't even know yet?" In addition who says that another coach would want to keep Otz? Food for thought.....

Remember the Bulls stated that they were about to "start their search" too.

The irony of that statement. Anyone who had to move at the ages his kids are would probably agree.

Their last day is Monday (as many have already said). I don't buy all the "he's skipping town as soon as the kids are done with school" This is his daughter's last summer before college, and his boys have AAU tournaments with their respective teams through July. At the very least I would think his wife and kids would be around to do those things.

Don't buy it now but please come back and acknowledge that you were wrong next week.

I still believe this one of the if not THE reason he is making his move to the NBA now rather than later. I think he believes this is the best possible time so that ISU isn't left with nothing.

Couple of things:

1. I'm sure Fred could have said "I'm not 100% sure I'll be here and you'll be in the mix for the HC job". But that is completely different than him being promised the job (almost no chance that happened).
2. Otz has interviewed several times for low and mid major jobs and has not gotten one. Why would we hand a high major job over to him without at least searching for other options.
3. It will be very easy for JP to tell the next coach he needs to have Otz on his staff. But even more, that new coach would be a moron if he didn't WANT to keep TJ.

TJ may very well get the job. But I would bet my house that he wasn't promised the job when he came back to Ames. Because it makes no sense and because people that know him personally have said that wasn't the case. And yet these conspiracy theories keep flowing...

Does anyone else think Fred may have damaged his reputation in coaching circles by having the "handshake" agreement before Thibs was gone?

Not in the teeniest, tiniest little bit. No.

Why in the world would it? Besides, "before" Thibs was gone leaves a LOT of time, because it's been very well known that ownership was getting real sick of Thibs, and it was highly probably he wouldn't be back after this year. Even at the beginning of the NBA season that idea has been out there!

Exactly. Its probably the best time Hoiberg could do if in fact he is going to leave at some point. Leaving after next season would set the program back a few years. Leaving now allows the next coach to get some very early momentum.

Agree he probably wasn't promised the job, but CFH may have given Otz his blessing as his recommendations. Additionally the longer this gets drawn out, it does limit the pool of candidate that may have come in April, but now feel to committed to their team now. He is for sure one of the candidates.
