So who knows? Fred is back today or monday? Heard both. And when are the players back in ames?

I think JP has to be thinking big here... a $2-3 million splash hire is what the program needs but more importantly what it deserves. The program is in good shape, the past 4 years have been successful, it's poised to have one of the best seasons in school history potentially this coming season if things fall into place, and with the right hire combined with a potential record season upcoming the nearly empty roster for 2016-2017 could be filled with some talented recruits.

Now is not the time for JP to be shopping for bargain priced coaches at Goodwill.... he needs to go big here.

Is $2-3 million enough for a splash hire? This is an opportunity to add fuel to the basketball rocket. Break the dang bank

I think this pretty much nails it, except for one thing. Lots of people are underestimating Fred. Up to this point in his life, no one has been correct in underestimating Fred Hoiberg. I know it's not what anyone wants to hear at this point, but he's incredibly smart and talented and will most likely succeed in his next venture as he has done with everything up to this point.

This is exactly right. Whether he reaches all of his goals in the NBA or not, he will have a good shot at them. I'd love to keep him as the ISU coach, but have no problem with him continuing to achieve. It helps some that I am a Bulls fan, but would root for him with any team.

Something to point out to all of the "Otz has been the guy for months" crowd. Pollard wouldn't have talked to a search firm if he had his guy all along...why waste the money and effort?

Sounds like it's all but a done deal and according to some around town he's just waiting until the kids are done with school.

Cue sunshine pumpers telling us it's perfectly fine for Fred to leave us after 5 years and use us a stepping stone.

Don't forget he essentially gutted the program so he could do so. After next year, we have absolutely nothing. I realize that we have Monte, Matt and a few others, but not enough to make the tournament. That could change, obviously, but it's not looking good.

Another thought, I wonder what kind of clout ISU will have in the transfer market if Fred leaves.

Does anyone else think Fred may have damaged his reputation in coaching circles by having the "handshake" agreement before Thibs was gone?

He wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't exploring every option.

Two points

1. I doubt we have Monte.
2. It is not gutted. We will still have Cooke, Burton, Noskowiak, Thomas and Babb. We will need big men BAD. We will have to get them through transfers. But that is a very quality back court.

Between this and Wojnarowski's article this morning, anyone holding out hope Fred will return should abandon ship at this point.

Time to move on and find the best possible coach we can.

I assume the two open seats this year and open roster next could work to an advantage in the coach search. The new coach will want some of his own guys. Give him the chance to bring I hisown style.
