Hoiberg Watch 2015: Thursday, May 28 Thread

I'm to the point where I wish Fred would just leave. Even if he stays, doing this every off season is a terrible way to hold the school you love hostage. Either leave or commit long term.

I reached that point about a week ago. Personally I don't get how anyone is buying the "he is recovering and needs time to make a decision" line with a straight face. The only decision he's weighing is Bulls this year or Timberwolves next year. I'm not interested in a lame duck coach this year. Hoiberg needs to either be gone or sign a new contract with a huge NBA buyout. And he clearly isn't going to do the latter, so hurry up and do the former.

don't let the door hit you in your ***

That may be the saddest post yet. Most of us are not happy of how this is going down, however Fred has taken the dumpster fire that McDoormat left us and turned it into a top 10 program.

The thing I don't get about Romar's statement is who told him Fred was thinking about heading to the NBA before next season? I assume it was TJ, but then Fred had to mention it to him personally. If so, the wheels have been spinning on this for quite some time.

I'd rather not think about a replacement for Fred, but if I had to chose it would be Steve Prohm from Murray St. He has a similar demeanor as Fred, lets his guys play and has recruited very well at that level. I know it wouldn't be the "sexy" hire and a lot of people wouldn't be happy with it, but I am still leery of letting TJ step in without head coaching experience. This team is too talented to have someone go thru the motions of learning to lead a team in his 1st year.

If I had to guess on Romar's comments, I would say that TJ didn't tell him anything was for sure. But said something like he thought Fred was going to leave soon (maybe not this year) and he would be better off being at Iowa State when that happened. I don't know that I believe that TJ came right out and told Romar that Fred was leaving in a few months and he was the replacement. But what ever was said or not said seemed to have left Romar with the impression that TJ was going to be the next head coach at Iowa State.

I'm not at all to that point and I'd rather a lame duck Fred coach the most talented team he's had instead of someone who has never coached before next year.

But....I do wish that if he has decided and all he is doing is waiting for the dumb Bulls to fire Tibs, then he should quit now without a job. There's no reason whatsoever that he needs to wait until that job is open.

Larry Brown has a good situation at SMU with a pretty big salary and a good team coming back. JP does not like to hire old guys.

Most important reason I would not want Larry is he has trouble winning in Hilton!!

I just, I can't even.

Who knows? Tonight is the first I heard that Hornacek is apparently a jerk. I obviously knew there were a few issues with some at Iowa State (which I assumed had something to do with previous athletic directors not being very welcoming to lots of former players), but I had no idea his personality is as big of a problem as it is.

I do think that you have to look at what is the worst that can happen? We hired a very likable guy who really liked Iowa State. And that got us an amazing 5 years followed by an exit at one of the worst possible times for Iowa State. We hired the nice guy and it is going to end badly anyway.

I don't care if the guy is a jerk, as long as he wins (and has the ability to get along with people). Larry was a jerk. Floyd was a jerk at times.

Hell, I'd argue Fred hasn't been the best to ISU in the last few years. He's gone back to JP each of the last 2 seasons (3 if you count this year), he's flirted with other college jobs (Minnesota), he has flirted with the NBA for several years, and now he's gone radio silent for weeks. If he wasn't Fred Hoiberg, a fan/media favorite with his great personality, those actions would rub some people the wrong way. But he gets a pass because 1) he wins and 2) he's Fred. A lot can be overlooked by winning...

Jamie's been working on this for a year. Maybe not officially, but laying the groundwork for sure.

I'd hope so. Or at least he should have an idea who he wanted. Bill Simmons said Hoiberg would be the next Bulls coach last year. Adrian Wojnarowski has said it was a badly kept secret the Bulls were interested in Hoiberg and that there was interest back.

I'd also hope that Hoiberg would do the right thing and tell Jamie he was likely leaving so he could get a head start on finding a replacement.

Can we get a separate thread for all the stupid coaching names that are getting thrown out? I'm sad Fred is leaving but his name doesn't deserve to be tarnished by names like Ron Hunter being touted to fill his shoes.

I wouldn't mind Brad Underwood as a coach. His teams at SFA averaged more points than ISU.
He also won their regular season and conference championships the last 2 years there. His "spread" offense would definitely work and be fun to watch with next years team.

Couldn't disagree more, particularly because most of that is completely unsubstantiated.

The way I look at it is if we're going the mid-major route just give it to TJ. He'll be cheaper and the players will be comfortable with him. For me it's all about next year, all the eggs go in to that basket. If we flame then we have a cheap whipping boy in TJ (fairly or not) and if we get to say...the Final Four, TJ will run with that so hard in recruiting and we'll stay up.

I don't want to one up CW or Rob Gray but BREAKING NEWS HERE: Next year is probably going to be our last shot at a National Championship for a LOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGG time and I'm not willing to mess that up any more than we have to. Even if it means another awkward transition in a year or two years.

Just a little context, we've never been as big of contenders for a NT imo in my lifetime of 35 years. We've got to make the hay now. Winter is Coming.

I understand we all kind of assume that Hoiberg is leaving ISU but can we please keep the "don't let the door hit you" posts out of this? There is no need to disrespect him like that.

Somewhat related/unrelated. :)

I sat behind the KSU bench when they played at Hilton and got the "pleasure" of hearing/seeing Frank Martin up close...as you all know, he's very "vocal." There was a time out and Underwood went out to meet a player to encourage/coach them and Frank grabbed Underwood and chewed him out..."get your f*ckin @ss off the floor" is what I remember him saying and then giving Underwood the stare afterward.

Funny...a few years later now and Frank would be lucky if Brad hired him as an assistant in the next few years.

I know lots of KSU people were tooting Underwoods horn when Frank left...now, they have Bruce. :twitcy:

You don't think if an ISU coach not named Fred Hoiberg was going through this year in and year out, that some fans would be put off or annoyed? Because I guarantee that would happen.

What is unsubstantiated? Not the raises, not the flirtations, not the keeping ISU in limbo...
