Hornacek to Iowa State if Hoiberg leaves would really be the "saving grace" to the program.

I'd like to see someone address timing as it seems so out of place right now. Taking on a new venture and undergoing a significant life change while recovering from major surgery is an immense challenge even if it were not under the glare of public view. Most of the media pontificators have no understanding of heart surgery, titration of blood thinners for life nor mortality knocking at your bedroom door so,............ it gets glossed over.

Regardless of all this clap trap, we'll soon see how much he really wants to do this. I suspect Fred doesn't know how he views the rest of his life in the aftermath of major open heart surgery just over 4 weeks ago. I maintain it will be hard for him to pull the trigger and go when it comes down to having to make the decision. He may think he's ready to jump, but will he actually do it? If he decides to stay, which I think he ultimately will, the annual flirtations with the NBA will cease.

If he goes, Iowa State should set the bar high and conduct a thorough search for a long-term replacement. No up and comers. One thing Fred has done is raise the value of the ISU Basketball brand. JP knows this and will take full advantage of that standing. I do agree that JP has done his due diligence should he need to look for another coach.

Larry Brown had an illustrious coaching career, and has had great success. I am just afraid that his ship has sailed, and don't think it would be a good hire. So many names being bandied about, what about Ron Hunter from Georgia State? I know he just received an extension through 2019-20 but he is just making under a mil a season. We could through more dough at him..
Larry Brown is arguably one of the half dozen best coaches on earth. Don't hold your breath.

If we don't get Hornacek because he rubs some donors the wrong way, it would be a tragedy. Time to be grown-ups and do what's best for the program.

#TeamOtz (who's with me?!)

Good stuff CW, thanks.

The thing I can't get past, which you address, is why you would want to go work for these doorknobs in Chicago? They treat their HC's like crap.

Jeremy says the donors think otherwise.

Who knows? Tonight is the first I heard that Hornacek is apparently a jerk. I obviously knew there were a few issues with some at Iowa State (which I assumed had something to do with previous athletic directors not being very welcoming to lots of former players), but I had no idea his personality is as big of a problem as it is.

I do think that you have to look at what is the worst that can happen? We hired a very likable guy who really liked Iowa State. And that got us an amazing 5 years followed by an exit at one of the worst possible times for Iowa State. We hired the nice guy and it is going to end badly anyway.

The only thing I would disagree with was the 'recruiting wasn't the problem in the McDermott era', and I don't mean that as a slam on TJ because I know he was responsible for a lot of the good players Greg got. But recruiting and coaching were problems.

McDermott's last roster was the only one that could even sniff the NCAA tournament as far as talent went...for every Craig Brackins there was a Marcus Brister, Clayton Vette, Cory Johnson that we landed...anytime you have Bryan Petersen, Sean Haluska, and Charles Boozer seeing significant minutes in your backcourt past year one, recruiting IS a problem.

Recruiting was not the problem, the coach was. Nearly every Brister or Vette was the result of Greg driving away another recruit like Staiger, Dunson, Hamilton or Johnson or someone that could have developed and helped the program had they stayed. The recruiters not only had to recruit new players to fill the spots, but re-recruit the current players and beg them to stay. The McDermott era failure was one solely due to coaching and still blows my mind because he is a better coach than that but had zero chemistry with any of his players while at ISU.

Anyone else not want to hire the up-and-comer this time around or ever?

Because of McDermott I am assuming?...the majority of hires at power 5 conferences are 'up and comers'. Some succeed, some don't. You usually have a better idea of what you are getting from a coaching standpoint hiring a mid-low major coach over an assistant. It usually comes down to whether or not they can recruit at a high level. Obviously there are exceptions, but we're 2 for our last 3 with up and comer's from mid-low major programs.

If Fred leaves and Hornacek doesn't come here...I would be happy with landing Brad Underwood or Steve Prohm and keeping TJ on as their lead assistant.

What were the recruiting classes ranked when McDermott was here? I am not sure, but I don't remember them being highly ranked. I don't think it was like we were bringing in top 20 classes. No one expected those recruits to compete for a Big 12 title (like I feel our program is at the level to do with Hoiberg as a coach). They expected them to maybe get to the NCAA tournament.

Agree to an extent, but they still had WAY too many misses, and Lucca and Dunson weren't that good either as far as being Big 12 caliber players. We'd hear about how great guys like Cory McIntosh, Clinton Mann, and Dominique Buckley were, and they'd either suck or not be good enough to beat out walk-ons. We had so many misses that Brock Jacobson, Bryan Petersen, Charles Boozer, and Sean Haluska all either started or saw very meaningful minutes in Big 12 play.

If we are going to classify Lucca as not good enough, then Fred also has a long list of not good enough players.

Who cares what they were rated? Wes Johnson, Brackins, Garrett, Hamilton and Taylor were all NBA players. Only Brackins was highly rated. Toss in Vanderbeeken, Hubalek, Clark, Gilstrap, Christopherson and other assorted players and it is mindboggling how bad we were. In 2007-08, we won 4 conference games with a roster that had three future NBA players. In 2008-09, we again won 4 conference games with yet again three NBA players on the roster. That team had Brackins, Gilstrap, Garrett, Hamilton, Christopherson, Staiger, Vanderbeeken and Dendy and won FOUR conference games. Talent was there (I believe all of Greg's squads featured multiple future NBA players) and he never did anything at ISU.

And out of curiosity, how many top 20 rated recruiting classes has Fred had?

Fair enough, but not nearly as bad as mcdermott's. Bubu is the only walk on that ever had to play meaningful minutes for Fred, and he was far more suited for Big 12 basketball than Jacobson, Petey, or Haluska.
