Christopherson as a sophomore was better than Lucca ever was...he could shoot, but was VERY limited athletically.
Actually, the list of misses for both coaches is quite long. The difference is, Fred took in talented transfer, Greg only lost them. There was a point where Greg and Fred combined to have like 2 four year players in a 7 year period or something. Nearly all of our prep recruits, regardless of coach, was a bust or left early. Only Clark and Garrett made it all the way through in that period. Now we add Ejim and soon Niang and Long.
Greg chose to fill his empty spring spots with afterthought recruits making his list seem worse whereas Fred filled spring spots largely with transfers.
Greg signed Dunson, McIntosh, C. Johnson, Boozer, Brister, Vette, Buckley, Eikmeier, Mann, Pomlee and Colvin that were flame outs. You can debate over who gets the blame for McKnight, Godfrey and Railey as Greg laid the groundwork but Fred chose to keep them. Then Fred signed Gibson, Sledge, Okoro, Dorsey-Walker, Edozie, Bluford, Custer and the jury is still out on the Big Greek. The prep recruiting by Fred has really been no better than Greg's, he just has done less of it and more transfer recruiting.
I see what you are saying...just imo recruiting is recruiting, whether it's jc's, high schoolers, or transfers, and it's been much better under Fred.
There have been misses, but never to the point where we are counting on multiple non-big 12 caliber players to compliment our stars.
If McKay would've beaten out TaShawn Thomas, it woulda been the 4th straight year we would've had a big 12 newcomer of the year. Fred is on a completely different level from Greg in coaching and recruiting imo.

No thanks, he had a ton of talent and didn't do much with it. Brown would be a transition coach to TJ.
Jamie's been working on this for a year. Maybe not officially, but laying the groundwork for sure.
I'm to the point where I wish Fred would just leave. Even if he stays, doing this every off season is a terrible way to hold the school you love hostage. Either leave or commit long term.

For the record even if Fred is 100% sure that he's going to the Bulls he can't "just leave" until the Bulls officially have a job to give him. Blame Chicago.
Fred's silence in this situation is either saying that he's going but can't officially say so yet, or he's still unsure. Neither of those should be his fault unless you want to say that growing up in Ames and being the Iowa State coach should require you to stay at ISU for the length of your career.

The thing I don't get about Romar's statement is who told him Fred was thinking about heading to the NBA before next season? I assume it was TJ, but then Fred had to mention it to him personally. If so, the wheels have been spinning on this for quite some time.
I'd rather not think about a replacement for Fred, but if I had to chose it would be Steve Prohm from Murray St. He has a similar demeanor as Fred, lets his guys play and has recruited very well at that level. I know it wouldn't be the "sexy" hire and a lot of people wouldn't be happy with it, but I am still leery of letting TJ step in without head coaching experience. This team is too talented to have someone go thru the motions of learning to lead a team in his 1st year.

I am starting to get there too. Even though it's only one year having next years roster would be a big help in landing a coach.
While I would love to have Hoiberg coach next years team I worry about next year turning into the Hoiberg farewell tour, which would be a distraction and I think the pressure on the players to make a deep run will be even greater than it already is, to the point it may be overwhelming. There's a fine line between playing with urgency and pressing. The UAB loss may already have the team close to the latter.
