The problem is now we have convinced ourselves if Fred leaves, Jeff H is coming here, and if he doesn't no matter what coach comes in we will be disappointed.

Also Hornacek would also leave for the next NBA job available.

I'm convinced of nothing.

The comparisons of Otz now and CFH 5 years ago are completely idiotic. Fred played I the freaking NBA for 10 years and was an AA basketball player. Fred learned the game from Larry Brown, flip Sainders, Larry bird, Kevin Mchale etc.. Those are 4 NCAA and NBA hall of fame players/ coaches. Fred is as cerebral as cerebral gets...Otz is the complete opposite..he's a charmer...a relationship builder...a salesman. Two entirely different people with two entirely different traits. Now Otz might end up being a HOF coach someday..who knows...but the risk of hiring Otz at this stage of the program with his lack of HC experience is far far greater than hiring Fred 5 years ago and it's not even close. I'd love to see the risk assessment reports that hiring firms spit out that JP will get if Fred leaves cause I can assure u that TJ will be at the very bottom of that chart.

And who do you think Otz has learned from and what the hell do you think he's been doing during his time with Fred? Just recruiting? There's a reason why he stayed the first time around and there's a reason why Fred wanted him back. Why do you try to make it seem like Otz and Fred are somehow at odds with each other? They pretty much came up together working to make ISU what it is today. The players on the team even next season are STILL Otz's guys for the most part.

I don't really care if TJ is the next HC either way it's really a crap shoot no matter what happens at the level we're at but you're post is just ******* dumb and full of hyperbolic bullcrap.

But is that really the choice?
Names we have heard as possible candidates being considered (some have been disputed):
Hornacek: NBA coach
Larry Brown: Former NBA and KU HC
Tim Floyd: Former NBA and ISU HC
Otz: long Time ISU and Washington Assistant.

Really the debate right now isn't mid major only experience vs. Long time asst. It is NBA coach vs. Long time assistant. I don't think we hire a guy that has no experience at the high major or NBA level.

I'd be happy with Hornacek or TJ. I really do think TJ is very smart and I think he would have Fred's endorsement, so given that, I'd be very okay with TJ.

And the next coach will be someone nobody has even mentioned yet on this board.

Why not Hornacek WITH TJ? That would be the best of both worlds. Or someone like Brad Underwood with TJ as associate head coach.

Low to mid major coaches that should be looked at. Underwood is a good choice for a coach. Steve Prohm, Andy Toole, Bryce Drew

TJ is a pretty good assistant but who the heck knows if he will be a good head coach. I hope if he gets chosen it is not just because of continuity. If he gets chosen it needs to be that they feel he will be the best head coach for Iowa State. I think it's really a crap shoot either way unless you hire a proven power 5 coach but that's not going to happen. Also don't think Hornacek would be a sure thing either.
Just don't hire a coach that is going to play slow boring mug the opponent basketball.
And please no Tim Miles. Don't know why people think he is so great.

Exactly. You can bump TJ an extra $50-100k to stay with the next coach regardless for continuity and recruiting. He gets to learn from an additional head coach and is the heir apparent. It's a win win for everyone.

I think TJ will be a very good HC, but I think the timing for ISU and TJ can be much better if he waits another few years.

Worst case, you get TJ for a year or two, and he goes to a smaller mid-major and proves himself and THEN comes back to ISU when our next coaching change happens.

It'll be TJ, so everyone can stop over analyzing everything. Get back to work, or get a job.

Pollard will hire someone nobody is even discussing. If you think TJ or JH get the job you must not of paid any attention to JP's past coaching hires. It WILL be someone nobody is even discussing. Probably someone I've never heard much of either. Take it to the bank.

Am I the only one who's unhappy that Hoiberg is apparently taking Henry with him? It's the only part in this whole saga that rubs me the wrong way a little bit. Tells me Fred sees him as ISU's most talented assistant.

I'm sure there are a number of people as talented as Henry in the BB world; it's unfortunate ISU's coaching staff has to be depleted even more.

I think it has more too do with Henry being an NBA guy more so than the other assistants than him being the most talented assistant. Cornell Mann wants to be a HC eventually so going to NBA bench doesn't make as much sense for him and he seems to be the lead recruiter on a number of prospects than Henry.

Me too and really that is the situation imo, the Larry Brown scenario (if thatbis indeed legit) would be Otz variation to smooth out the first year/transition to new coach bumps.

I don't think Henry will be an assistant coach for him in the NBA. I see him more of a behind the scenes scouting guy.
