Pre-Memorial Day Hoiberg NBA Update

Seems to me you could make the buyout equal to his raise. Then we're made whole if he bolts after one year it didn't cost us any extra dollars. But I'm not an expert on how these things work so I'm probably being naive.

Makes the commitment Coach Fennelly has made to the program and university look that much more special. One of the few coaches that have backed up his words with his actions.

If #10 is gonna happen, "The door is not shut on Fred/ISU, I still see some scenarios where he comes back for 1 year (i.e. T’Wolves for ’16-‘17), though very few scenarios where he comes back for 2 or more years." then lets just get it over with, save the heartache and save the money to keep him here just a year or two. This is the best time to bring in a new coach with a great team to build some recruiting momentum for next year because right now we got none. But I am one that likes to know right away and don't drag things out.

He leaves here because he is not happy, its not going come down to money.[/QUOTE]

Disagree. He is happy in Ames for the many stated reasons. He leaves because he wants the challenge of being a successful coach in the NBA, something he has been clear about from day one.

What I have gather is that a majority would rather Fred just leave already? The jobs he is interested in ARE NOT OPEN yet. He is supposed to announce he is leaving for a job that is occupied?!

hornecek basically plays hoiball now.

And I am not sure why we assume Fred thinks tj could take over for him. Jamie does. And influential people on here do. But honestly the more they promote him the more I wonder.

How do you know Jamie does?

I think the majority want him gone asap if he's going to leave anyway next year. And those of us who feel that way, don't care what his job options are that are open or occupied that he may be considering.

I still think Fred knows exactly where he's going to be next year. I don't think Fred is sitting at his kitchen table with a list of pros and cons and trying to decide. Everything he does is calculated and he knows what he wants. It's well known he would have taken the Cavs job last year in a heartbeat if he would have known LeBron was going to end up there

You really believe he is not having discussions with teams talked about unofficially through his agent or other parties? He does not have to comment on conversations. Come out and make a statement he will be here for the next several years and this all goes away.

You don't say...maybe that "tension" started when he demanded all expenses be paid for him to come back for a charity basketball game...

Can you provide a source/link for this? Not saying it's not true, but I've seen this statement a few times this past week.

I'm moving into the camp that says 'commit or gtfo'.

I really don't care about Fred's NBA dreams...at least not to the point it hurts ISU MBB. We hired him with zero experience as a coach because we thought he could do the job and that he wouldn't move onto greener pastures. After this year we've got massive holes and having a lame duck in the seat isn't going to bring in anyone worth having.

If he doesn't like a big NBA buyout...or isn't willing to give us 5 years...then go with God. Go live your dream someplace else...but ISU isn't a holding spot to wait out your dream NBA offer. Go coach some ****** NBA team and wait out your dream job on THEIR dimes.

The bolded part above is not true. As JP has stated, we've all known since day one that Fred would likely move on to the NBA at some point because that was his dream.

My problem is that he hasn't achieved any of his goals since coming here. No Big 12 title at all. Nothing better than one Sweet Sixteen appearance. If he leaves now, Johnny Orr, Tim Floyd, and Larry Eustachy will all go down as better Cyclone legacy head coaches than Fred. I didn't think Fred would ever be satisfied with being 4th best at anything? But I guess he's not the competitor I thought he was.

And I surely didn't think Fred would leave to the NBA while also taking ISU hostage in the process when he did decide to leave. He is currently hurting ISU more than he's helping IMO. I didn't think he'd want to go out like that?

If you're going the the NBA, then make a behind the scenes deal with the Bulls or T-Wolves and quit now. Or if you're going to stay, then say so now so it doesn't hurt our recruiting anymore than it already has. But don't leave JP and ISU hanging like this. And definitely don't ask for other people to pony up their hard earned money for you to stay one more year and do this to us again next year. That is just really being selfish.

At this point if I was AD I would just hire another coach. I loved Fred being our coach but the run is over whether he realizes it or not. He can either coach minnesota or the chicago next season or they can find him a job for next year. announcing your staying one more year does nothing for ISU.

The only other alternative would be Fred agreeing to a long term contract and publicly stating that he is staying at ISU for the long haul. Anything less and JP just needs to push him out the door sooner than later.

Really? I never heard anything about that.

The situation is not fair to anybody. If you love who you work for you don't have one foot in and one foot out. Make a decision. If you want to go coach in the NBA go do it. If you want to coach ISU come out and make a statement. Allow a buyout to be put in that show you have a long term commitment. This has been a very selfish move by a few people that impact allot of young peoples lives.

Unless JP and Fred are working behind the scenes to get a coach we'll all be happy with?...

Fred needs to leave now. He does no good coming back unless he makes a commitment to ISU.

This!

The more it gets talked about, the more I would rather him leave now versus next year. I also think it makes great sense to not throw a ton of money at him if he can't be willing to commit to being our for X amount of years.

I honestly don't believe this is about money. Pollard has said that CFH has always wanted to be an NBA coach. Think about it....every college player dreams the dream of playing at the highest level. Fred did that, and succeeded. Now he wants to try coaching at that level, and that's his prerogative. We're all thinking of how this affects us personally, my own thoughts are that Fred should do what he wants to do. I know way too many people who have a job they hate, rather than trying for what they love. (Not that Fred hates his current job, AT ALL.) But when you have a chance to achieve your dream, why wouldn't you try?

Here's my baseless speculation on this Fred's thoughts: Fred just had his second open heart surgery and spent last season at <100% (no tie!) because of his heart. He's not under any delusions that he can do this for the next 30 years, he knows his time is valuable and limited. He also cares deeply about ISU and the ISU Men's Basketball program. There is no way he thinks he's bigger than the program, or that the program success of the last 4 years can't continue with out him. I think leaving this year is an option to him because it sets the next coach up to begin with the cupboard stocked and have immediate success.

No, you wouldn't. Not here, unless someone ponied up the money so you could be the guy who fired the Mayor. Nobody, absolutely nobody, is going to be the donor to put that in motion.
