Pre-Memorial Day Hoiberg NBA Update

I'd rather Fred just go at this point. Our recruiting is going to be nonexistent until he leaves. I don't see the reason to pay him more if he would leave next year regardless.

I've never heard of any rift between Hoiberg and Pollard, but if that's the case Pollard needs to get bent. The only rift between Pollard and Hoiberg should be how long it takes Pollard to say "Yes sir".

Jeremy, what are you hearing regarding TJ if Fred leaves. Is he guaranteed a spot on the new staff or will that be up to the new coach? Is he a serious candidate for the Head Coach position?

I think it's interesting Pollard doesn't want to propose a higher NBA buyout. Would the buyout really limit Fred's ability to move to the NBA? At the very least it'd be nice to get a few bucks when he does go and a way to help us out a bit financially.

I don't get paying him more for another year either, if he's waiting on the twolves he'll wait at the same pay.

Fred should not have an issue with putting a big buy out in his clause if he wants to commit to ISU for the long haul. If he has one foot out the door, might as well leave now so it doesn't cripple our recruiting for next season (next class is very very important).

If what Jeremy has written is true, i have lost a little respect for Fred - its fine if he wants to go to the NBA, but to drag ISU along as your "backup plan" if the dream job doesn't open up is not fair to the school he says loves.

There's no point to having him coach one more year. The donors are right - get a commitment or move on.

The donors are absolutely right. If he's not going to commit to more than one year there is absolutely no need to pay him more than he's making now. Probably better for him to move on now, in all honesty...

Thank you, Jeremy! If money is a factor let's make it happen. Get a "Keep Hoiberg in Ames" campaign going. 50 K plus fans throw in a $100 a piece boom there is a 5 million bonus for you Fred. Your twins are set for life.

This. Make Fred a good, fair offer for both parties without hanging donors and Jamie out to dry. If Fred says no, then so be it and move on.

Most likely, the reason is that dumping a big NBA buyout into the contract would be something Hoiberg is unlikely to accept. Think about it: if you want to go to the NBA, but aren't sure when if you're given the choice to go now or you have to pay a lot of money if you go in the future it's going to push you to want to go now.

I was originally on the "one more year" bandwagon, but I'm not sure now. If this whole situation had never happened and Hoiberg had just coached at ISU for 6 years, taking us deep into the tournament on year 6 and then left, I think most people would be OK with it. That's the idea behind one more year, that he might be able to take us deep in the tournament and leave the program at the height of success rather than after a disappointment. On the other hand, if you are 100% leaving after one more year then what's the point?

I guess I don't understand why they wouldn't want to put a larger buyout on the table. It's not rude to ask about it and it could be posed to Fred in a non-threatening manner. "We have donors who want to pay you but they want assurances you'll be around. We completely understand if you don't want it but we've got to offer"I'm also not sure what former players have issues with hornecek but the only one with more cache is probably Fred and if he leaves he shouldn't have a lot of say. If we have an opening you've got to call Jeff and ask about interest...again make HIM say no.

I think the kids are set for life already (if Fred wants to give them $).

At what point does he have enough money? Making $4MM in Chicago or Minneapolis that much different than making $2.5 in Ames? Fred doesn't seem like the type of guy that makes it rain where ever he goes. He could make $2-3MM / year for the balance of his career in Ames..........if he is truly happy that should be plenty of money for him and his family.

He leaves here because he is not happy, its not going come down to money.

I really, really don't understand those saying they wish Fred would just leave this year. ISU has their best shot at a FF/NC next year and there is no one else I'd rather have coaching than Fred. Also, there are no guarantees. Who is to say the TWolves job isn't as attractive next summer?

One thing we can lay to rest is the "it's not about the money". Of course it's about the money and money will always be a factor even with a native son like Fred.

  1. Some are leery of a strong push for Hornacek due to past tension between him and other players, coaches, donors. This would be interesting to see unfold moving forward.
You don't say...maybe that "tension" started when he demanded all expenses be paid for him to come back for a charity basketball game...

My issue with one more year is the 2016 recruiting class will be crushed. So he makes one deep run this year and then the following year ISU struggles for the NIT.
