I started watching ISU BB in the mid '80s. The only thing I know about johnny is what I saw on the court and on TV (those bartle's and jame's ads).
But it seemed to me that he was as genuine and honest a person as one could be (or at least as much as a division I basketball coach could). If you were his friend, he was yours, even if he didn't know you. That's what I saw.

In this regard, I think he would tell Fred to follow his heart, not his head?
Who knows where that would take him though, but it may allow him to make the correct decision no matter what "we" want it to be.

Johnny also left the cupboard full for Tim Floyd when he retired. Something that Fred shown appreciation for many times.

I think Johnny would say something like,

"How do these damn reporters know so much about what I'm going to do? They must be really smart. I'm there in the gym everyday and, dammit, I don't even know what I'm going to do."

Somebody dredge up the Wolverine Fanatics.com thread the week Johhny left for ISU so we can see it!

Johnny did NOT leave the cupboard full for Tim Floyd. Johnny actually left the cupboard full FOR Jim Hallihan. Johnny lobbied hard for his long time assistant coach of 12 years at Iowa State to succeed him. But Johnny's wishes were not followed and Tim Floyd was hired. Gary Thompson was behind that hire.

So YES.....the cupboard was full......but Johnny did not leave it full for Tim Floyd. Johnny left it full for Jim Hallihan. But it never came to be.

Stormin, so what do you think Johnny would do in Hoiberg's sitation?

Johnny was NOT forced to retire. In fact, his retirement came as a surprise.

Is that you Gene? I suppose you're also going to say that Hallahan was going to be Johnny's successor but he decided he'd rather run the Iowa Games.
