A current 1st rounder on roster?

Please name a 6'8" 300# OT that has gone in round one. Campos will have to improve drastically

Sorry but his speed will not increase. Not anymore than Montgomerys in the same time. How hard is it to understand that speed matters to NFL scouts? Especially at the WR position. They are the exact same player.
BTW- Do you think the NFL cares if Lazard was suspended? I mean Winston just went #1 and Irving signed with the chiefs.

This post is about first round potential. You show me a WR that runs a 4.65 40 that has gone in the first round and I will admit Lazard has first round potential. Until then, I stand with what I have stated.

A 4.65 in high school, right?

Yes.... and Montgomery ran a 4.52. Next you will tell me that Lazard will get faster and Montgomery will get slower under the same training regime.

I am not saying that Lazard can't/won't end up being better than Montgomery. He may end up better. He can refine his game more. What I find crazy is the hype. Lazard gets a 48 yard TD against NDSU and he is a world beater. Montgomery gets a 59 yarder against OU and "eh". It is marketing and iSu is right to market the hometown kid. Look at the summary from the OU game

"Offensive Players of Note...
Allen Lazard had five catches for 51 yards to lead the Cyclones in receptions. The freshman has 21 catches in the last three games and 34 this season, which is the third-most by a Cyclone freshman. Darius Darks holds the record with 49 catches in 2008 and Todd Blythe is second with 39 in 2004.

D’Vario Montgomery finished with three catches for 88 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter."

They pump up Lazard even though Montgomery was the leading receiver in yards and had more catches in those there games. It is marketing and iSu is right to market the hometown kid. Just like iowa markets Scherff. It sells tickets, it helps recruiting. Lazard is a good kid. A squeaky clean hardworking great teammate type of kid. They should market him.

Lazard is a great kid and has potential. I have been an iSu fan long enough to know that potential doesn't mean squat. It is why I don't buy into the Campos hype. Neither one of those two have the measurables to be a first rounder in the NFL draft.
And the NFL draft is about measurables.

Nate Solder is the only OT taken in the first round over 6'8" and he was 320#. WRs don't get taken in the first round of the draft running a 4.6/40.

We rarely if ever see players get faster at iSu. Speed is something you have or don't have.

40 times dont mean crap unless theyre electronically timed. Even then it needs to be a third party reporting the times or else you get the 'bias' customary 2 tenth reduction for hype. Pretty much automatic when you compare hand timed and electronically timed there's a 2 tenth difference.

Anyone know how many 6'5 and 210+ pound Wide Receivers ran under a 4.5 forty at their NFL combine?

I'd guess that is incredibly rare...so I don't thing Lazard really has a speed issue.

And, Taz, forty times often DO improve...because SOME of running a timed forty relates to technique. Guys prepping for the combines generally perfect, or strive to, their sprinting technique and so improve their times. Not uncommon at all, really.

Also, Lazard was electronically timed at The Opening and many times that are compared to his are using hand timing, which is often up to .2 seconds faster than electronic timing.

And a perfect example of a guy improving his 40:

Jarvis West. He was a 4.5 guy coming to ISU, and he ran a 4.30 at his pro day.

I'd be shocked if Lazard ran a 4.65 at the combine/pro day, and it seems as though someone has already timed him much faster somewhere.

Iowa States staff is great at upgrading our players bench press and 40 time. And I mean great. The struggle has been at keeping them healthy, and improving them on the field as football players and executing as a team.

Also most likely due to said injury problems, and musical chairs on the coaching staff.

It'll be interesting to see the product this year with the same coaching staff, a lot of experience, and hopefully less injury plagued.

If we use Lazard the way he is intended to be used, he can be. There were times last year he looked like an NFL WR.

You just gotta lob it up there, and it doesn't matter how many men are on him, he's catching it.

I bet you were one of the guys that would call into the radio shows when Todd Blythe was at ISU and said we should throw it to him every single time.

I hope he does but he doesn't seem explosive enough to me. Still don't think he will be first round

Give him a few more years in the weight room. They will bring his explosiveness up. I'm not going to declare him an automatic first rounder but I think it's fairly clear that his future is in the NFL, if of course that is what he wants to do with his life after school.
