Friday OT #2 - Tattoos

I got mine when I was younger. I only regret one of them. And I agree, neck tats are terrible.

I have a friend who owns shops Ames and Des Moines. He's done all my work. He's an ISU grad in fine arts and does great work. Everybody has their own reasons for getting ink.

What place does he own in DSM? I'm looking for a good place.

I have 5 tattoos, plan on getting more, at this point in life it gets to be a priority thing.... Plenty of ideas just, not enough funds (money get spent toward other items).... Goal was always 2-short sleeves.

I have one, and desperately want it gone. It was impulsive and impetuous in my early 20s, and I cringe when I think about the fact that I'm going to be a 90-year-old with a saggy tattoo someday.

Overall, though, I think there are lots of good reasons to get them. Just not for me.

Pictures or you don't have it.

With all this said, the other night my wife and her friends were talking about the Divergent movie we recently seen and how attractive Tobias was. So I think Im going to get my back all tattooed up with all the Divergent Faction symbols.

I actually hate this mentality. Because it makes no sense. It's such 50's puritanical bullcrap. We perpetuate this stereotype that tattoos negatively impact the ability to get a job, and the only reason that tattoos negatively impact the ability to get a job is because we've always been told that tattoos negatively impact the ability to get a job.

Wanting a tattoo of a water color humming bird on her shoulder does not impact whether or not a person can or cannot correctly calculate the interest on a bank loan. Wanting a dragon to cover his calf does not impact whether or not a person knows and can apply laws justly or fairly. It's just such a disingenuous argument.

Exactly! Because if it's one thing an old conservative banker REALLY looks for in a candidate is a whimisical free-spirit who plays by their own rules!

It is what it is. The rules are made by those making the rules and for awhile longer anyway that will be the more conservative generation. Once the the next generation works their way up, maybe then the nose hoops and bolts in the ears look will be desirable in a professional office.

Ha. He wouldn't know me by that name anyway. Maybe if I gave you my real name, but I'd expect something, you know, for the effort.

Well, then just tell him you're ribs...you're friends with him, give him the insider info, not us.

Plus, get a kickback. "Hey man, I'm sending people your way, give 'em a deal...if they say they know Ribs, I sent 'em. How about something on the flip side for the extra biznez?"

Great thread topic. I don't have any and never will. Don't have problem with others who choose to have them. Just not for me.

At least you have your priorities in line. I see so many young people with a few thousand dollars worth of tattoos and they still live at home.
I always laugh when I hear commentators on Sports Talk radio talking about Shabaz Napier's statement about going to bed hungry when he had plenty of money to pay for tattoos.

It takes experience to start recognizing the difference between "wants" and "needs". Some people learn early. Some never learn...

If you decide to go get one, PM me.

My oldest daughter has several tats on her legs. One is a cobra (for me). Other leg is a mermaid (for her mom, who was a swimmer in college). One is a crown with deer antlers (for her sisterwho acts like she's a queen, but loves to deer hunt). She hasn't gotten one yet for her other sis, but I'm sure it's coming.

which is the one who posted for you in mafia? :)

I may have spoken too soon. He used to have one in DSM but I can't find any info about it. The one in Ames is Jaded Angel.

I had a couple done by Bob at Jaded Angel, including the huge one on my back that he designed for me, and he is great. He's got a fine arts degree from ISU. When I got mine, I think he was the only artist working in the shop but I know when I stopped by a couple years ago there were a few other artists and I think a dedicated piercer working there.

Am I the only person that thinks that tattoos look great on any one with darker skin, but not white skin? Seems like blacks and mexicans can always pull it off, but I get bugged when I see a white guy with visible tats on his lower arms..
