Tavern Clones

Was born when my dad was in vet school and then he opened up a practice by Waterloo. Tough place to grow up a Cyclone fan. The win that ended the 15 game losing streak was my sr year. Graduated Wartburg along with my brother. Other one went to UNI and now the last one will start at ISU in the fall. I think Dad's happy he finally got one.

Converted Hawk fan, here as well.

I grew up in Marion and everyone I knew were Hawk fans. I even had a teacher in 1st grade that made the class sing the Iowa fight song on Fridays before game day. I was brainwashed from day 1. It really wasn't until I was in High School and started working as an errand boy in an architectural firm in CR that I really knew anyone that was a Cyclone. At that time I was just starting to convert as I wanted to be an Architect and was looking hard at ISU.

It pretty much cemented my loyalty when I told my parents I wanted to go to ISU and they said "Well, we don't have to root for them, do we?" All the rest of my extended family are Hawk fans, but to no one's surprise, only 1 cousin has actually attended the Unviersity of Iowa.

Tavern Hawk started out as a good description of all the Hawk fans we all hated. The drunk losers that love to tell you how bad the CyCLOWNS sucked and how awesome the Hoks where. 99.999% of the time they are townie losers.

Then, somehow people started associating Tavern Hawks to all Iowa fans who didn't attend Iowa, even if they aren't drunk townie trash-balls. This is incorrect.

So, long story short. Just because you didn't attend ISU, it doesn't mean you're a Tavern Clone. If you are a drunk, townie ISU loser who talks about how bad the Squawks suck all day long, then you are a Tavern Clone.

End rant.

Dead on.

The 'tavern hawk' thing started from the fact that it was usually obvious that the biggest ******** amongst the Hawkeye fanbase were those that didnt go to the university. If you heard someone running down Iowa State as this ****** school, you could almost guarantee they neither went to Iowa or could meet the admissions standards at either university. That said, there are plenty of iowa fans that didnt go to that university that are not bad fans. Other than not being approving of that particular allegiance, i have no problem with those fans, just as i have no problem ISU fans who didnt go to Iowa State... just dont act like an ******* and make all of us who did go to the university look bad.

LOL. Nope, didn't want to pretend. But then I realized that I would be spending the better part of my freshman and sophomore years in the Armory, not to mention no one could tell me what the relevance was of making a paper fold-up of a hammer, crescent wrench, or ice scream scoop.

Yes, College of Design, the weed out process worked like gold on me.

I graduated from Iowa State, but really should have shopped around better. I'm about to to go UNI in the fall to hopefully get a worthwhile degree this time.

I chose iowa state as a fan, not for the correct reason: school.

If someone with a college education but not from Iowa State can accurately be called a "Tavern Clone", than pour me a beer and pass down the pretzels...

I'm from Ames, but went to UNI for my Bachelor's and then after a couple of years out of school went to Central Michigan for my Master's. I guess I'm a truel fan.

Is the State Fair one of the best places to witness a Tavern Hawk?

We visited the State Fair last year for the first time in decades. It was an 85+ degree day.

Cyclone fans were generally tastefully dressed, perhaps an ISU cap or shirt. Rarely both.

For the Tavern Hawk, it wasn't enough to tastefully wear an I cap or shirt. No, nearly every Hawk fan needed to have on an I cap, black shirt, AND shiny polyester black shorts or pants.

I grew up a huge Iowa State fan in the 70's and early 80's. Graduated from Northwestern U and then lost touch a bit with the Cyclones until we moved back to Iowa 15 years ago. Now we live in Iowa City, teach at U Iowa, but cheer on the Clones to beat the living crap out of Iowa. Family members are ISU grads and son is at ISU now.
Years ago they used to open up Nevada High School gym in the winters for $1.00 apiece and we would go to play basketball. One tavern hawk showed up in Hawkeye sweatpants and sweatshirt. He then took those off and was wearing a Hawkeye T shirt, shorts and Hawkeye socks.
I turned to the other guy and said I bet he's wearing a Hawkeye jock strap.

Yeah one of my roomates in the dorms was an architecture major. It was like having a double as a single.
