Jeff Orr...Super fan?

When you watch the replay carefully, you can see him saying something about "Go back to Africa" right before the shove. Orr clearly said something else besides "piece of crap" to set Marcus Smart off. He should be banned from the attending college basketball. I don't condone Smart's actions but I feel sorry for the guy.

I would be embarrassed by Orr if I were Tech fan (Just like I was embarrassed by Weatherwax for what he has done).

I have absolutely no problem saying that Smart plays the game with a lack of integrity due to his flopping. Just because it has become part of today's game does not make it right. Does ISU have players that flop? Sure they do, I cringe if they get a call because of it.
Agreed. There is a reason why the NBA is now fining players for flopping; because it is a part of the game that should be removed from the game. After reading page after page after page of ISU fans blasting Smart for flopping all over the floor, including the legendary double flop, it's odd to see anyone try to justify Smart's flopping as OK. Perhaps an ISU player admitting he does it as well changed their stance...

So you are a lip reader?

I guess I'm in the minority here, but after watching the TTech GoPro video it seems pretty obvious to me that something else was said after "you piece of crap." The microphones on those are likely pretty directional and you can make out the words when it is facing towards the stands but right afterwards it is moved to the side then back towards the court. What was said afterwards I don't know, it may or may not have been a racial epithet, but I don't buy that Smart went from relatively calm to that level of rage from only "you piece of crap."

Doesn't mean that Smart didn't lie, but certainly doesn't prove that he did to me.

The camera angle does not change from piece of crap at 18 seconds until the same guy says "hey, hey, hey" several times until the 25 second mark and Smart is back on the court.

Some of you people will reach at anything to make it seem the fan was deserving of this assault.

I also find it funny how many are on here using Orr's statement and apology to say "ha said something bad and apologized so it must be racist" when in Orr's statement he specifically say he said nothing racist.

My guess is Smart tried to use the race card to bail himself out of trouble and failed. Is it really possible that everyone around Orr is lying? The fans, the ushers, the security guards? All lying about Orr not using racial language while Smart is the only one being truthful? Come on now.

Also, have any of Smart's teammates who were right there corroborated Smart's allegations?

I think we're all calling BS on that one, tough guy. You're really going to go to jail for assault because someone near you is a moron? That's brilliant. Just tell the guy to shut his mouth and be done with it. If he doesn't, bring it to the attention of an usher. No one needs an arrest record screwing up their life forever to prove how "tough" they are.

agree

It's a big conspiracy don't you know. TTU doctored the audio/video. Everyone got together after the game and concocted this whole "piece of crap" thing. Because you know the N-word is just flying around every arena and noone cares. They just laugh it off including the black lady sitting behind the racist. Forte was down there with him and didn't hear anything. But ya know Forte is white so what do you expect. And at the end after 5 minutes calming down on the bench while the refs sorted through this crap, he goes off again and has to be manhandled off the floor. Because Orr telepathically sent him the N-word from across the arena. It's all there, you're just not getting it because you don't hear voices in your head.

Plus why have none of the reporters, TV people and an usher right next to the action told that he used a racial slur? I can't believe with that many people that close if one was used it would not have been made public. At that what he has admitted to saying is bad enough and in the heat of a close game could caause a reaction. Both the player and fan were out of line in what they each did. But I will bet that even with all the comments made on here thre will still be people (note I did not say fans) who will make such remarks in the future and most people around them will do nothing about it.

I am disgusted by Orr. While I don't excuse Smart, a 40yr old should know better. Smart is young and making mistakes he'll learn from. I am not defending Smart, but without Orr to incite Smart this would have never happened.

Excellent article. The fact is nobody knows yet or may ever know what Orr said to Smart, but it's obvious from the tape that he said more than the one thing we do know, which was to call him "a piece of crap" because Orr admitted that much. Orr's history would indicate he probably yelled other things at him during the game. Within 15 minutes of Smart's public apology an ESPN reporter said he was told by a T-Tech source that a racial slur was used, but didn't name the source. ESPN also reported that they checked with some other basketball coaches and one coach said he warns his players to stay as far away from Orr as possible, and I assume that was probably a Big 12 coach. Both men were wrong, but considering Orr's history (including the FU gesture to the Texas A and M player), it's puzzling why some are so quick to believe Orr instead of Smart. They are quick to defend a 50 year old man with a history of goading 19-20 year old kids in the heat of a game when he admits to calling a player a piece of crap. None of us has any idea what else was said during the game, while Smart was on his back, and when Smart got up in his face. Yes what Smart did was also wrong, but he didn't instigate this fiasco and there is absolutely no good reason to believe a guy with a history like Orr's over Smart. And please quit using the flop to judge Smart's character. It's part of basketball and if the NCAA wants to get rid of it like the NBA, they need to put in a rule. Is it a lack of integrity if a player gets away with a foul that isn't called, but doesn't stop the game and go tell the official to give him the foul?

And if the chair hadn't been there a couple of games ago, Marcus woundn't have kicked it. Obviously, that chair incited Marcus' behavior.

Who cares about a chair? And all he did was kicked it, it's not like he picked it up and threw it at someone.

Hmmm. So now kicking a chair is further proof that Marcus is a bad person? Mel Ejim is probably as nice a young man as there is, but even he occasionally gets upset in the heat of a game as evidenced by his flipping the bird to the BYU fans and a couple of times he's shoved players.

It is as if some people think one of these guys has to be the victim. Both were really wrong in what they did. Orr is a late to middle aged idiot that appears to have never grown up. I would like to think he will learn from this, but I doubt it. It is not his first incident and it will likely not be his last. Smart has proven to be hot head this year and is struggling with the failures of his team. He is young and he may grow from this, but I have my doubts too. This was not a single incident for him either.

If Smart had not pushed Orr, I think the argument might be different.

I'm pretty sure he heard voices coming from that racist chair. Only thing that makes sense.

Uhhhh no. Flopping is part of the game...selling calls is part of the game. In no way does that link up with a persons integrity....that's idiotic.

I agree and the "Flopping is lying." is really a stupid remark. Rarely would I say things to harsh but this is over the top dumb.
