Source: K.J. Bluford is transferring

It's the same as McKay. Neither Bluford or McKay redshirted yet (as far as I know anyway).

They both came out of Juco this fall as Juniors, signed with a team then decided to transfer prior to the second semester. It doesn't matter if you played in the first semester or not. McKay can't start his "redshirt" year until he enrolls at his new school (ISU) for the spring semester. He said on Twitter that he's in Ames today. He had to finish out his first semester at Marquette.

Bluford is in the same situation, provided he's at another school by the start of spring classes this year. Starts his redshirt year then and will be eligible second semester next year with 1.5 years to play.

No you are wrong. Regular eligibility is not granted by semester, the in residence requirement requires a transfer to go to the school for a year before playing (hence if you don't have a redshirt or you choose to not use it by transfering midyear you can lose half a year or 2 half years by the residency requirement). McKay did not burn any eligability this year and Bluford used his 3rd year. McKay will burn .5 year in the fall not being eligible to play because of the academic residency requirement, this year he is redshirting. Playing matters 100%. You cant redshirt half a year. Mckay is redshirt this year and is just sitting out first semester (unless he gets a waiver). I played college sports had a scholarship and know how this works. I would bet my left nut.

A redshirt is two consecutive academic semesters. It doesn't matter if they are fall and spring (like typical), or spring and fall (as in McKay's case). You are correct in that you can't redshirt for a single semester. If you are going to redshirt it has to be two consecutive semesters.

McKay was considered eligible to play at Marquette this fall. He used up that semester of eligibility just like Bluford did at ISU. If you are considered eligible by the NCAA it doesn't matter if you play a minute or not.

A guy can redshirt any two consecutive semesters he wants.

That's definitely not true. You can't play the first half of a season, see you aren't going to be getting as many minutes as you want in conference play and redshirt the second semester of the season, and first half of the next year then come back in and play the second semester. A redshirt isn't official until after the season is complete anyway. So under your scenario, a kid could play something like the following amount of games:

Fresh: 12 (non-conf only, redshirt the second semester)
RS Fresh: 18 (2nd semester only after finishing his redshirt)
Soph: 35
Jr: 35
Sr: 35

That's not how it works.

FIFY, Wow not one statement in there is actually right. That takes some moxy to be that sure and that wrong.

Edit: actually 2 statements are true mckay was eligable (though that doesnt mean you lose eligability) this fall and I was right.

McKay can't use Blufords scholarship for the same reason he can't use Bubus. Because they already used them for the year. You can't split a scholarship.

I've got plenty of moxy. lol

To address your points for the sake of arguing.

1. A redshirt is indeed two consecutive academic semesters enrolled at the same school. Otherwise, why wouldn't McKay be good to play this fall at ISU? He could have started his redshirt year already if otherwise.

2. Same point... explain to me your second "NOT TRUE"

3. You already said that you can't redshirt for a single semester and now I get the "NOT TRUE" for saying the same thing you did.

4. Did not McKay use up a semester of eligibility this fall for being enrolled at Marquette? He was eligible after all, right?

That's actually four statements.

1. I did, but will again. He is not eligible this fall under the transfer residency requirement. It is not that you have to "sit out a year" or redshirt a year as is commonly stated. You must be in academic residance 1 year at your new school BEFORE you can play (so you can acclimate to academics as transfers tend to perform worse or so goes the reasoning) Since mckay enrolled at marquette he could not be in residency at ISU. That could not begin until this semester hence he will not fulfill the residency requirement until next december.
2.mckay is not redshirting next fall he is redshirting this year. (As the previous poster stated redshirts are granted at the end of the academic year). You can sitout like mckay over the course of 2 academic years to fulfill the residency requirement but that isnt the same as redshirting. Often recruits use their residency year with a redshirt year so they dont lose eligibility but if you dont have one you lose a year like uthoff did at iowa for his residency year.
3. I EDITED, only second half of your statement was false.
4.no he did not use a semester of eligibility because he redshirted. You get 5 years to play 4. You are eligible to use any one of the 5 to play. Campos was eligible to play (juwt like every redshirt) this year but did not burn a year. Mckay DID NOT burn a semester, he is redshirting this year.
Bluford will either sit all of next year to redshirt [if he has one] or just play second semester next year for half a year burning his final year. Thie seems most logical given the timing but not sure who takes a guy for .5 year.

Yellow Snow is definitely right. Sorry IAStubborn.

You have to sit out a full school year before you can become eligible to play at your new school. Bluford will arrive at his new school for spring semester 2014. He will red shirt from Jan 2014-Dec 2014. He then will eligible to play Dec 20, 2014 which is the end of the fall 2014 semester, making him a RS/Jr and giving him 1.5 years to play at his new school.

Here is an example of Trency Jackson that played 12 games at Texas Tech during the fall 2012 semester. He then transferred to Western Kentucky for the spring 2013 semester and red shirted spring 2013 and fall 2013. He just became eligible to play at Western Kentucky on Dec 14th(the end of the fall semester) and has played 4 games this season.

I hate to be the :policeman: in this thread, but if I read "eligable" one more time my head is going to explode. It's eligible. Or eligibility. Carry on.

Oh, and good luck to KJ going forward.

Wow, enter Norm to back up Cliff ;) No he isn't right but thank you for prolonging this. I am not sure why this isn't sinking in your examples actually prove me right. . TRENCY didn't actually redshirt he sat out a year in academic residence. He played his freshman year juco and 12 games his sophmore year at tech using up 2 years of eligibility. He enrolled in january beginning his residence as a fulltime wku student (this is actual requirement BEFORE you play not sitting out in other wirds you cant sit out at ayour current school etc) and he will play this january as a jr with 1.5 years of eligibility If yellow snow and now you were right he would have 2.5 years remaining as he has only played 1.5. But in reality he had 2 years of athletic eligibility left at wku but had to sit out the first semester due to academic residency requirement.

And so it begins.

Good luck to KJ. I am a somewhat surprised he did not get more time over the young guards. If he can find a place to get shots he will have some big games.

I am also curious as to how Fred uses this opening. I imagine if we get RV, it goes to the best available. I am hoping for another Kane/Anderson, but if no luck a Cunningham (kid looks like a Wesley Johnson), juco, transfer would be big for next year.

would have loved to see what he could do, especially with Thomas not producing as much as we would like.. although watching KJ on twitter, it was clear he was not happy with his playing time...

I'll tell you what you would have seen:
1. A drop in field goal percentage.
2. A drop in assists.
3. A drop in winning percentage.

Hey cloneluke80, looks like cyclonestate is your father.
