Brands quote on this weekend

Brands is looking for someone to pick on so that he feels better about Penn St winning yet another national title this year. It just happens that we are that someone...

There's a reason highly ranked Iowa guys tend to totally flame out if they lose an early match at NCAAs. Through their coaches they literally do not know how to deal with losing. It happens once and they are just totally broken. Happened to McDonough last year.

I'm not saying your thought is wrong, but your example is flawed. He was hurt, pretty significantly as well.

Hey Brands remember when Varner majored Beatty and taunted you by signalling that he broke him? Good times..

A couple of things. I understand the Iowa hatred, but think some may be going a little far. The Brands are great for the sport of wrestling. Is their matside antics a bit over the top? Yes, in my opinion. But if we had the same, we would be embracing that "emotion/fire". I always thought M. Zadick was the "worst".

And to the comment, why would he not expect to beat the tar out of us? Do you remember the score to last year's dual? I am hoping for a win at 65 and 97. Anything more would be GREAT! I am nervous that we may let one of those slip.

Bottom line is this is used to be a great dual. We have not kept up our end of the deal lately. Even when Varner "broke Beatty", we LOST the dual. Isn't that what is more important? Look at the scores of the last 7 duals....

06-07 - Lost 6-24 (Finished 2nd at Natl's)
07-08 - Lost 13-20 (Finish t5th at Natl's)
08-09 - Lost 15-20 (Finish 3rd at Natl's)
09-10 - Lost 16-18 (Finish 3rd at Natl's)
10-11 - Lost 13-22 (Finished t20th at Natl's)
11-12 - Lost 9-27 (Finished 35th at Natl's)
12-13 - Lost 3-32 (Finished 11th at Natl's)

Hopefully the rivalry gets back to competitive soon and we build teams that have a chance to knock off Iowa. Like or not, we are no where near Iowa right now...

He was injured and had shoulder surgery after the season. He essentially wrestled with one arm. Nice example.

It was an injury that was with him all season that was a "not gonna get any better, not gonna get any worse" thing. You can argue that the injury is why he lost that first match and I wouldn't fight you on it. The injury didn't cause him to then totally flame out of the tournament as lots of other top ranked Iowa wrestlers have as soon as they lose their shot at the finals.

He looked like crap for most of the season. It's pretty possible he finished where he should have given his limitations

This rivalry became less competitive after:

1) Brands' wrestlers followed him to Iowa City
2) Cael's wrestlers followed him to College Station

Those 2 significant swings in talent shouldn't be overlooked when we wonder why we've struggled to challenge Iowa on the mat.

They're also very senior heavy while we are very underclassman heavy. Next season I think we get them. They lose a lot of firepower and the only two seniors we lose have guys right behind them that are at just about the same level.

As it relates to Mc D, like him or hate him he was a great wrestler but the reason thar he showed up to nationals like a pile of chopped meat was because Tom used him up and did not do his job and Mc D is all man and won't share the that he was mis-handled by Tom.
Tom May be good for the sport but as a person he is a pure jerk. There were people at nationals talking major crap about how bad Mc D was and that he can't keep up with the young studs and a lot of Iowans (Iowa and Iowa State alike) were saying the we were not seeing the real guy but we just did not know was wrong at that time.
tom should Man up and say he ruined this kids last year.

Yeah, for all the "it was the injury" talk McDonough never was rested once the entire season.

I'm pretty sure he sat out a meet early in the year, maybe against Michigan??? I'm a cyclone fan and for anyone to say he wasn't hurt is crazy.

This stuff is fine for Brands to say, but if Cael would say that going into a match with Iowa, Brands would walk over there and punch him for it.

The guy sure can dish it out, but he sure can't take it.

I like how in this thread we puff our chests on being great fans then within about 5 posts we degrade into the type of irrational idiocy we mock Iowa fans for.

BTW, I noticed a good percentage of Iowa fans cheering for Gadsen at the NCAAs last year, including my roommate who I didn't think would cheer for ISU in a million years.

I watched the Iowa video for this week and honestly within the context it wasn't even message board fodder like it might look from a tweet. He was asked about whether his guys would be able to enjoy thanksgiving and he talked a bit about having their weight under control and then tossed that in. Any wrestling coach in the country would have said something like that. And I am a guy who seriously hates Brands.

Brands is a terrible coach if you can even call him that. Id call him more of a modern day slave driver coaching up a bunch of thugs. It works, he gets results, if thats all you care about. Hes not shaping his guys into well rounded athletes who excel both on the mat and in the classroom and leave respectable young men who are a class act and will be successful in life after wrestling. Thats why I like Kevin Jackson and the program hes building here after Cael gave up and skipped out of town because all he cared about was winning. He didnt want to put in the work maintaining a first class program like Jackson is doing after the Cael debacle and Rhoads is doing after the Chizik fiasco. Brands has no class and is just another hawk thug.

Their recruiting classes are consistently better than ours and they are loaded for bear for the forseeable future. Ramos graduates? No problem...bring on Thomas Gilman. Lofthouse? In comes Sam Brooks who as a true frosh beat Beard last season. They are going to dust us on Sunday starting just 3 seniors and with their 4th ranked junior HWT and 10th rated soph 197 watching from the sidelines. We will narrow the gap but a win is doubtful at this point.

I would blame conference realignment just as much as this. When Nebraska and Missouri left it really left the conference in a tough spot that they couldn't replace.

The big10 has taken over the sport. With the money they are pumping into their programs I wouldn't be surprised if they soon end up being the only conference to have wrestling.

Thank you for posting dribble so that it appears you have no idea what you're talking about. The only reason I dislike Brands is because he's doing what Cael was doing at ISU before he left. Rebuilding a powerhouse. KJ is getting better at it, but wasn't the fire that TB or CS were at their respective schools. Iowa wrestlers aren't "thugs," just way more aggressive than a lot of teams.

Seriously, just give up the act that you're an ISU wrestling fan. You're as see-through as wet lace underwear.

At what point are you just going to admit to yourself that you're an Iowa Wrestling fan? This is a safe place.

Gotta disagree on that. I think Brands is a ridiculous caricature who doesn't know the difference between intensity and insanity. And the whole gang rape thing from when he was in high school doesn't exactly help.
