Paul Rhoads and Recruiting

As a long time observer of Iowa State football while living in Columbia MO my perspective on Iowa State is recruiting and player development has always been their downfall. I would suggest patience. You just completed a state of the art football facility. Give it time. It took Missouri a few years after opening the Devine Center for recruiting to pick up but it did and the facility was a big reason.

I can tell you one thing. Paul Rhoades would have plenty of job interviews if Iowa State fired him and a lot of Missouri fans would welcome him in Columbia. He can coach football.

The concern remains about the OC and playcalling.

For starters just because UNI isn't currently ranked in the top 10 doesn't mean they won't be. That was a heck of a football team.

As for recruiting I still believe this is our most athletic team, I don't think we saw that last night. I know everybody wants a better recruiter, but I frankly think the best course for Iowa State is to bring in players who have potential but are overlooked.

Two years ago against UNI our guys were surprisingly weaker and slower. That same team beat Oklahoma State. Have a little bit of faith.
I think people forget about the last time we played UNI. Our defense was much better against UNI 2 years ago and we had like 7 or 8 starters that were out for that game because of injury and suspension. I also remember we had 2 of our tackles on the o-line that were out that game that are now playing in the NFL. The difference this year is the players on the field last night are basically the same as you will see all year.

Maybe I'm remembering this wrong but I remember a couple lineman being beaten up and that was it for guys not playing. Last night we had Farniok miss a lot of the game and Watson not play too.

What happened last night had nothing to do with talent. Nothing.

I've seen you post this several times.

What's your analysis of both sides of the ball? I haven't got a chance to watch any replays (and I'm not sure that I want to).

In short, very poor discipline defensively as well as poor tackling. Luke Knott was a huge improvement though which gives me some sort of hope. Not much though. We are quite possibly one of the worst coached offensive football teams in a BCS conference relative to what we actually have. I swear that Mess has a dart board with plays on it in the box and that's how we select them.

We lost Farniok but that was it. That was a pretty big loss though I will admit. Watson will help some I think but probably won't make much of a difference considering how bad our front 7 really is.

If Watson had made a couple tackles SR missed it might have been the difference.

I've never understood why we go after the third/fourth tier Texas/Florida players who are undersized.

Because third tier Florida players are better than first tier Iowa players. Take our shrine team and they get destroyed by 3rd teasers in Florida. Destroyed.

It doesn't seem like they amount to much after high school (aka the only players I can think of that went on to do things were KO and LJ who weren't "fourth tier" or "undersized" to begin with).

I just think it's dumb to get fourth tier players from those locations and expect to beat their first tier counterparts in conference play.

Sorry for saying "tier" so many times :)

Agree 100%. People who still say it's not about recruiting are idiots. There is a reason why schools like Alabama and Ohio State have freshman that contribute immediately. They recruit guys that are physical enough to play immediately.

While there are some diamonds in the rough and some projects that work out well, the higher rated recruits usually do better. When you're a Big 12 team that finishes only ahead of Kansas in recruiting, there's a reason they're usually the only team we finish ahead of most years. If you fans fail to see that, you're ignorant and/of too much of a homer. Bottom line is recruiting needs to pick up or Rhoads will never win more than 7 games in a season.

No kidding, genius. You are not a troll, just dumb.

Bottom line, complaining about recruiting at Iowa state is stupid. It is one of the hardest jobs in college football. The weather works against us. Small natural talent base. Local competitor (with better tradition) with whom we have to compete. Recruiting will ALWAYS be difficult here. Who do you think we are? Seriously, who? We have no tradition, crappy weather, are a million miles away from places that do have talent. Who do you expect we will get???

If Paul Rhoads can't sell it, it can't be sold. The sooner you get that through your thick head, the better. This isn't about accepting mediocrity or a defeatist attitude. It is freaking reality, slapping you upside the head. You can whine and wish all you want, but we aren't getting upper level recruits to come here on a regular basis. Iowa can't do that and they have three top-8 finishes in the BCS.

None of those guys at UNI had high-major offers, or they wouldn't be at UNI. We will ALWAYS have to take risks on guys. We will ALWAYS have to look for diamonds. That is the way it is.

******** about recruiting is lazy because it is easy. Check out emaw after the k-state loss. They were complaining about Snyder and his recruiting. Look at WVU's site after their win. Complaining about their recruiting. And you know what? Recruiting to either is easier than to ISU. So shut up already. Some times you win, sometimes you lose. And if you are ISU, you end up on one side more than another. If you can't accept it, get the **** out of here. I am so tired of this crap. Rhoads will coach up the ones we have. Will we win them all? No. But it is the best we got. Sack up or ship out. Good riddance to all of you "wah, wah , recruiting sucks, *******."

Sorry. End of my rant.

Right, but what first tier players are we going to get??? Or course we are behind in talent. We will always be behind. Our only choice is to find fringe guys and coach them up. If you believe differently, you are ignorant.

They don't wanna be in Ames but they wanna be in Cedar Falls? Both towns are dumps but I would give Ames the edge. We got beat in every aspect of the game Uni has a better team, thus they have better players or coaching? Our O line had 15 plus pounds on their D line yet where getting pushed around. It's because we have recruited a guy on his size or potential. Not his talent.

Don't know for sure but I would be surprised if anyone on UNI picked them over us. Can you remember losing a recruiting battle with them? Think they beat Iowa in a recruiting battle? No. And you know why?? Because they have a bunch of guys that were not highly recruited. They coached them up and played with a chip on their shoulders. Because they were slighted by us.

That RB didn't have an offer from us or Iowa. What other offers did he have? Don't be dumb. They man-handled us last night, but don't act like they are out recruiting us. They settle for guys that are even more on the fringe than we do. Which is why we beat them more than they beat us.

It's called not doing the conventional crap that everyone else does. Looking for diamonds where no one else is looking. Taking some chances.

Why don't we onside kick it every time? Go for it every fourth down? Like you said, we have no tradition, no history. What then do we have to lose?

I have to disagree with this post. Recruiting has got better every year. We do have those 2 star guys who have no other offers, and those guys usually turn out to be decent special teams players and sometimes grow into a role at their position. The 3 star guys are the guys we count on. I think we have ALOT of good young players and we should be really good eventually. We can't really expect guys to be stars in the first game of their career can we? Guys like Charlie Rogers will grow to be good players, but right now they are not not experienced and still learning. Be patient people!

You say it as if Rhoads' staff is the best recruiting staff Iowa State could possibly have when Chizik's staff were better recruiters. Also, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have a recruiting class full of guys that don't have offers anywhere else. Yea sometimes these guys get overlooked and you will get a solid guy or 2 but not an entire class.

People keep saying that Chizik's staff were better recruiters and I'm not sure where they are getting that from.

Recruiting is Getting Better, but D-line is an Issue

IMO the staff needs to do a better job recruiting D-line. I know that people are:excited to see Coe, but the fact that he is starting and we moved Irving to DT in the middle of fall two-a-days, is a clear indicator of a recruiting issue. The other issue to me is our DEs are just not strong enough to maintain contain. Scott at 230lbs has a good motor, but he is no match for a 300lb OT. I was hopeful Irving was going to be that big body DE who could shore up ISUs run defense.

I also feel a weak DL begets a week OL and vice versa. I hope the chage in OL coaches can raise the bar on both sides of the line.

I really shouldn't say better, I should say equal. What I am worried about is that the poor recruiting under Rhoads has been on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and this is the most important part for a successful football team.

We have been recruiting d-linemen. Those guys are still developing though and not ready for Big 12 football just yet.

No kidding. You know who else thinks this?? Everyone in college football. The D-line is the hardest position to recruit in football.
