DeAndre Kane visiting next week

you guys that don't like transfers are probably not going to like Hoiberg going forward. He is always going to take the best players he can find. If he has a spot for a one year guy and he feels like that one guy for one year gives him a better team he will take him, every time. He is playing modern college hoops...and those of you that think we are still in the four year mode are going to be disappointed. He will take a one and done from HS and he will take a one and done as a transfer. It is an NBA mindset that he will assemble the best team every year that he can, always with one eye on the future. It is definitely a multitasking type of recruiting, but it is the future and I am convinced that Fred is a master of it.

That's just it. It isn't a Fred Hoiberg thing. It is the way that all of the big boys have been doing business for years. They recruit over players all the time. That is why they stay on top.

Some on here act like ISU is the only team to accept transfers. It is college basketball. And has been for years. There just hasn't been as much supply in the past as there is now. And we are actually a place where transfers want to go. If you don't think Mac, Wayne, Larry, or Tim would have taken transfers here, think again. Tim Floyd put together a team of juco transfer in Willoughby, Pratt, Cato, and Bankhead.

Well no....i mean we had 3 NBA caliber or fringe caliber players at his position or similar positions. And they had been there 2 years in the program.

Kane is coming in for one year, and unless something happens... i dont think hes on their level of our previous guards. Im just asking if thats the case...wouldnt we be better served to get Morris that time who recruiting wise...is a pretty elite player? I dont know...i think so...but i dont know.

I wasnt saying play Morris just for the sake of playing him. Not what i intended to say anyway.

And you know that how? Not saying I think he is but hard to say that without ever seeing him play. Also I don't think Maurice Jones was going to be as good as KL but Fred obviously still wanted him. I'm guessing Fred knows more than anyone on here and if he wants Kane I'd love to have him. If he doesn't then I won't care he didn't come here.

Very true...you could be right. Im just not sure what good it does Morris to have him getting a handful of minutes while Kane plays, to maybe eek into the tournament...when he could take his lumps, and be a much better player for it. And possibly a far better team.

I mean arent we realistically either way looking to the following couple years when Georges is a jun/ sen
? to make something big happen.

Simply, no. You always play for the immediate year.

True, he may not be on the caliber of what we had before but more importantly he may just be good enough to be the difference in making the tournament this year.

What is this big 12 body...ive never liked that. Let him sit to get this big 12 body. Hows his body? Is he big enough? He needs to get bigger, faster, leaner...needs thats conference body. What is that exactly?

Ben Mclemore was 185 pounds, Korie Lucious was anything but rugged bruiser, Clyburn? no....Kabongo is 180, Elijah? Angel Rodriguez? I could go on and on......these were not physical speciments like Babb, Smart, etc.....they could just play. And these were the better guards in the conference.

If Morris can play...he can play.

To be fair each of those players were in different circumstances

Ben Mclemore - Red Shirted due to acedemics plays the 2 (different responsibilites from running the point and spotting up for 3's)
Korie Lucious - Didn't start his freshman year
Clyburn - JC for two year precisely to build his body
Myke Kabongo - started all 34 games as a frosh, but then again he was the number one over all PG recruit in the nation, and could have went pro last year. (MM is top 90 but not a top 10 recruit)
Angel Rodriguez - Started the final 17 games of his senior (edit freshman) year. (basically the plan if Kane would commit IMO)

Actually your listing of those players hurts your argument, other than Kobongo all the players were allowed to develop. I really like Monte's game and he maybe be an instant starter but adding insurance and allowing him to time if he needs it isn't a bad thing.

If they fail to make the NCAA's this coming year, yes Fran's seat will be getting warm. He won't be gone, but 2014-15 would become make or break for him.
Yep, when Uben and other experts expects 10 Big Ten teams to make the NCAA, you need to be one of them or be irrelevant.

Very well said. I can't remember where I read or who said it (I know, sorry...) but I recall someone saying Hoiberg is going to treat his ISU team like a NBA team every year. Think of the transfers as veteran free agents. It is a part of the game.

If Kane can help us, get him. There are a million things that can happen from an eligibility and injury standpoint between now and next winter. Once he gets here, if he's the best play him. If it's a combination of him, Morris, Thomas, and SDW play them. If it's Bubu and some fat kid from the rec center that can drain threes and handle the rock play them.

I think the likelihood of Morris' development being permanently stunted playing with Kane to be about as likely as him being permanently stunted due to confidence being hurt by playing too much too early.

So I'll go with getting the guy who gives us a better chance at the tourney this year.

Just getting in is important. A lot of really good teams bomb out early and a lot of ok teams make the sweet 16 just based on matchups. Win now if possible and do anything you can to make the tourney because you never know what can happen.

You think ejim gives a crap about what MIGHT happen when Niang is a senior?

Does this mean I made the team?

FYI,:jimlad:, and I am neither fat, nor a guy who can drain threes, nor really handle the ball, so Hoiberg probably doesn't really want me

Really no one here knows where minutes will go. However, we'll always take a guy that's played 100 or so college games, with talent, on the roster. That's a no-brainer. Memphis and Pitt and likely others that didn't get a call back are thinking the same thing. That said, no one here knows if Morris comes in and redshirts or starts or somewhere in between. You don't win Mr. Basketball in Michigan if you are a project. I know, let's take them both and see what Fred does. Seems to have worked out to date. These debates are silly.

I'd be shocked if MM red shirts, even if we get Kane.

Remember sdw is still young. I am not expecting major minutes yet from him. Hopefully kane can come in and give us a more competitive slasher type player while sdw works his way into the lineup.

I didnt think so.....maybe we DO need Kane for that experience..i dont know. Maybe he would be better for our chances of getting to the tournament next year....probably so...absolutely so. Im just not sure i like the message it sends a kid like Morris that we recruited for years. Maybe its nothing.

Bigman: Please reference where i said Fred should sacrifice the season. Ill wait.....i just said let Morris take his lumps...thats all. Go back to your dungeons and dragons game kid.
I want the "message" to all players, recruits, fans, media: winning matters.

If we have a chance to get the number one recruit in country who happened to play same position as Morris two years from now would it be a bad message to morris if coach recruits said player...with your approach the message would be bad.

I appreciate you admitting you "don't know", and further admitting that Kane likely improves the team, I really appreciate that this is about "messages" and not basketball. I don't give a rats *** about messages I care about winning and fielding the best team every game.

Morris has probably paid attention the last several years, I would guess that he and his family have known that coach isn't opposed to taking transfers. The message should be well known the coaches at ISU want to win, and they will regularly restock with best talent available. To act as if this phantom and obfuscated to a recruit speaks loudly to the naïveté of your position.

Well you are taking some liberties with my posts and stretching my actual opinion a bit.

kane ISN'T the top recruit in the country. Obviously if that were the case....this isn't an issue. He's a good player with some history that at most has one year. Playing him.....removes in essence one year of performance from one of the top pgs in the country, michigans Mr Basketball that will be here for a long time. Morris will get minutes just not nearly as many. And there is zero guarantee kane wins us one more game than Morris does. To me it's not worth it.

You're not sacrificing a winning message by not taking a one year guy and playing a top freshman pg....that's idiotic to contend.

Kane and Morris each getting a lot of minutes aren't mutually exclusive.

Nothing wrong with Fred giving him a test drive. If he likes what he sees/hears and thinks Kane can help, great. If not, at least he checked. Due diligence.

Here is my opinion of DeAndre Kane. I am completely sold on him. This kid can score, slash, dish, and not only that he is an experienced player. It would be a HUGE, (forget that) MONUMENTAL get transfer if he came aboard. The question is, if he does sign a financial agreement, where would the scholarship come from.

And the speculation that Coach Fran McCaffery will be terminated if his Hawks don't make the NCAA Tournament next season. Ludacrous!
