Explosions at Boston Marathon

In the event that police/FBI are able to identify the person(s) responsible for this horrible event it is very likely that his/her photo, name, personal life etc will become immediate public knowledge. This person will become a defacto celebrity, although for all of the sick, wrong reasons.

Question: Does the ability of mass data/information transfer via TV, social media, news outlets etc in a way "promote" these individuals seeking attention to their agenda's?

Im not in any way saying that news/media etc are responsible but just asking the question.

Adam Lanza is a household name because of Newtown, James Holmes for Aurora.

I dont know how the media doesnt cover something like this but I cant help but feel that so much publicity makes other crazy, sick people WANT the same attention even if it is negative.

I wouldn't be surprised if its some nut job trying to make a point that he doesn't need guns to hurt people and banning them won't do a damn thing.

Foxnews is now reporting some elements of an Al Qaeda style "pressure cooker" bomb may have been found. This is obviously early and such reports are highly inconclusive at this point, but it is interesting. We'll all just have to be patient before drawing conclusions but if I was forced to make a guess, this just feels like an AQ style operation....probably by a somewhat disconnected splinter cell...but certainly inspired by and perhaps even in communication with Al Qaeda or its affiliates.

I really hope and pray that this is a one-off incident, and not the start of what other countries have experienced on a regular basis for years. As someone said above, the fact that no one claimed responsibility makes you think it was not a foreign terrorist group.

Or that it isn't over.

JUST STOP!

That's a good point, but I personally don't mind the conjecture, even considering the poster involved. I'm obviously interested (as we all are) in the identities of the perpetrators and as you said there is very little conjecture in the media. I'd love to see a little analysis of what's known so far by someone reputable in the intelligence community. Almost 24 hours later, it's a little frustrating to still be so in the dark on this. (It also reveals that I am spoiled by the 24-hour news cycle.)

"Richard Barrett, the former U.N. coordinator for an al-Qaida and Taliban monitoring team who has also worked for British intelligence, said the relatively small size of the devices in Boston and the timing of the blasts suggest a domestic attack rather than an al-Qaida-inspired one."

That's his opinion. Given his work history, he probably has a little more insight than your average Joe.

Somebody has got to have seen something or gotten this person in a picture.

I keep thinking about this. Somewhere out there, somebody remembers seeing someone shoving a bag or package under a trash/mail bin yesterday morning and thought nothing of it until last night. It has to show up in a picture or surveillance video somewhere.

I need to learn how to make a legit tourniquet, I think.

Rip a section from your shirt a few inches wide. Find a strong stick. Fold the shirt section over (but make sure it isn't really thin) and then place it above the wound (between the wound and the heart), several inches away from the wound. Put some padding between the skin and the tourniquet. Tie a half knot, put the stick on top of it, then tie a full knot over the stick. Twist the stick until it is tight enough to stop the bleeding.

I see no point in trying to piece together information and misinformation alike to try to determine who is behind it at this point. I mean if you want I can name a group and we can all be mad at them together. It was the Mongols, they did it.

I would bet the closest association with an organized international terrorist organization is that whoever did it fancies themselves a fan of al-Qaida or the like. It wasn't big or sophisticated enough to be something like al-Qaida.

My guess would actually be the Huns. They have those battering ram units that just annihilate cities in the early game. Can't stand the Huns. And of course, their unique ability is that they take city names from other civilizations. How ******* stupid is that?

The news channels are doing it all the time, why can't we discuss it here? Honestly, this is how society works now. With social media, everyone wants to jump on anything to be the first to report it, weather it's true or not. I told my wife last night when they were talking about the third bomb that I'd bet just about any amount of money there was no third, undexploded bomb. That's what sucks about 24 hour news and 24 hour message boards. We have to fill the 20 minutes of real information we get into a 24 hour day. So, when you run out of new stuff to report on, you grab an expert and have them, "Speculate" on what the findings will be, what the next move will be, "What if this would have a nuke?" It's really gotten out of hand.
