DB Nigel Tribune commits

(phone rings)
Nigel Tribune: Hello?
CPR: Hi Nigel, this is Paul Rhoads from Iowa State University. Was wondering if you would like to play defensive back for us this year
NT: Goddamit Tolburg, I'm hungover, my knees hurt and if you are going to pull this **** at least you could say you were from Oklahoma

Haha....thats fantastic

Where are we presently in relation to where we were at this time last year? Specifically, number of recruits and how they were ranked, other offers, etc. Anyone care to do that research?

Good questions. I would love to have a mid-Summer report from the last few years.

seriously people just because you have never "heard of him" or he doesn't have any "gold stars" doesn't mean the guy isn't any good.. heck who had heard of A. Horne? Ever think maybe the coaches have a connection there and a hs coach sent them film? or stumbled on the guy? the way I see it.. I'm not a coach, a recruiter, or a scout.. I am a fan, if Rhoads likes the kid, I'm going to cheer for him

Does he fit any of the emerging preferred characteristics? For instance, is he a wrestler? CPR sounded pretty high on wrestlers in last year's recruiting class.

Iowa seems to be ahead of schedule but that doesn't necessarily mean we are behind schedule. If we are about where were at this time last summer, I'm not going to lose sleep. I agree with the others, we're ISU and it's a long process when we're squaring off against the heavy hitters on our schedule.

Here is why I'm not worried (I know it sounds like a lame argument).

1)This coaching staff knows what it's doing.
2)It's early
3) the unkowns of the strategy

EG if the staff has decided to take a crack after 2 bowls in 3 years and a win over a #2 team on national TV to upgrade talent they may follow a strategy like this. 'Let's get some players locked in who have potential to make sure we can fill the roster'. Once we have that done let's take a serious shot at a team talent upgrade by recruiting guys that weren't answering a phone call from us 3 years ago.' You can't follow the 2nd part of this strategy without part one without risking ending the recruiting season with next to no commits ,iso you have to get some early commits. How many times has Chris and AA talked about depth on our team now? Depth is a luxury you must have in order to execute this strategy because without it if you don't get every 3 star recruit you can you can't even field a BCS team. (Have you guys not played dynasty mode on NCAA football :jimlad: ) Cyclone Football may be at the point where a change in recruiting is great (like someone said our previous recruiting classes have gotten us to a 5-7 win level)

I'm not saying that's what's happening, I'm saying it's possible, and we as fans have no idea. Which get's back to point 1. I trust the coaching staff. It could be anything. It could just be we have found a few diamonds in the rough and they all committed right away by coincidence and because we were by far their best offers. But this staff has demonstrated it's not afraid to take a risk on an onside kick to turn the status quo around. I doubt their personality is that different in recruiting.

Paul Rhoads and this staff are not going to fill this recruiting class with guys that can't help us win. They know what they are doing. What looks like an awful thing could just as easily be the next big step in the right direction for the program.

Two other big things that we will have next year:

1. New offensive coordinator. Look for the offense to work much better.
2. New DB coach. Look for lots more interceptions.

Especially with the defense, I would not worry a single bit about defensive recruiting. These guys are great with defenses and know what they are looking for.

We will get better recruits as the season goes on. When recruits see us doing well and upsetting schools they will want to be apart of it. Also after these kids play their senior years of high school, their rankings will more than likely raise and other teams will be taking notice of what they are doing. We just got to them first.

If this is the case I vote we hire a new defensive coordinator so the defense plays better, perhaps a new special teams coach so the kicking is better and new stadium operations people so the food lines go quicker.

We did the food thing a year or so ago. I've noticed marked improvement :spinny:

Wasn't it another no star that CPR called to make sure he was "all in"? Thought CW wrote an article on that. Looks like we are trying to find our own talent rather than having experts tell us what talent is. I doubt Rhoads and Co. get on rivals every day to determine who to recruit. If that was the case, everyone on this site could be a recruiter. I guess we should go back to our old strategy that worked wonders pre-CPR.

I went through this thread, and fond so many posts that I anted to respond to that I finally just said screw it.

Here are some facts for you guys, just since I've been following recruiting for over thirty years. Matter of fact, AA's Dad (Land Shark) and I graduated HS the same year--and that's when I found a fascination.

Five Stars: The way that I heard it put best was when one BCS coach, signing in the barn early, was at home and turned on ESPN. After listening to what players those "experts" were going on about, he realized something. These players weren't any better or worse, they were the ones that everybody knew about.

Simple enough?

CPR is out doing his homework.

In fact, my first reaction is that Jacksonville is right in the middle of both Burnham's AND new coach Troy Douglass's (sp?) recruiting sweet spot. Now, I'm going to ask you a little common sense question. Do you really think that the brand new defensive back coach is going to make his very first commitment, as early as June, a player he'll be coaching himself, a player that isn't worthy of playing at a Big XII level and helping him prove himself, let alone keep his job? Hello out there?

Okay, so maybe it's just me.

Then there is the reason that he didn't have a page. Maybe he was injured. Maybe he was at a school off the radar. Raines is a monster FB school and talent producer, but there is indication that he might not have played there last season.

If you really want an example, take Dondre Daley from last February's class. The kid didn't have a page, let alone stars, before somebody whispered into Rivals' ear that we were recruiting him. Turns out, his coach was former ISU player Atif Austin, and Daley had just transferred there after playing at a tiny private school previously.

Look at the film, and it's hard not to be impressed by Daley. He's long, lanky, can run and jump, and has hands. And oh yeah--he's also only just turned 16.

If you want to extend the track record, just look to David Irving. The kid is immense, and puts up athetic numbers the equal of the best defensive end at the NFL Combine--the end who went to the Packers first round, as I recall. A guy four or five inches shorter.

Oh--before you argue, those aren't really the only examples I could trot out.

So hey, I have no problem looking at this kid, and realizing that CPR knows what he;s doing, and if he's taking a commitment from this kid all the way in Jun, er July, it's because he's a good player.

Now back to your regularly scheduled bickering.

I'm not sure who I should trust... CPR who has ISU on the ups, or recruiting sites that highly ranked players we got our hopes for and they didn't play any better than a lot of our guys ranked a lot lower than them...

Quenton Bundrage, JaQuarius Daniels, Dondre Daley, Quan West. Don't you sorta like the potential of these young receivers.....

At first glance, this commit IS a little concerning. But, just reading the tea leaves, it looks like he transferred HS's and likely grew some and put on some weight. On top of that, we have three defensive coaches with major FL connections...they're not exactly going down there knocking on doors, they know people. Plus, Rhoads and Douglas have coached some top notch DBs. They know what they're looking for. If they were grabbing this kid in January, I'd be worried. But in July? Most of their top DB offers are still available. And if Tribune was a mid-major type player, he'd surely be around in December or January if ISU missed out on their top targets. IMO at this point, ISU does not accept commits just for depth or filling the class, they are getting guys they believe can be starters in the Big 12. And especially at DB, their judgement should be trusted.

Another thing that may help you feel better, who was on his team as a senior last year, I havnt looked to see what the school produced last year, so im curious. Raines is a talent loaded school maybe he played behind somebody good? Maybe all of a sudden he is developing into a man, maybe he needs his senior year to come into his own, I have seen a lot of kids in HS mature from their junior and senior years and are a totally different player. IMO the coaches see something in this kid thats why he is on board now.

How many stars you have next to your name dont mean ****. It means you get more offers and more publicity by the big boys of media. Welcome aboard Mr. Tribune prove it on the field that is all you need to do. Glad to have you be apart of this Cyclone Family.

This. Although stars do mean a little. But outside the really elite, the difference can be made up with coaching. I like our odds on those every time.
