NBA Draft Projections

Fred disagrees. He said yesterday that Royce won't really raise his stock by coming back. He'd be 4 years removed from high school if he came back. He's gone.

Different interview than I heard.

I would still come back. Mid first round is when you make the leap. Otherwise, you could slip to the second round and not get a guaranteed contract.

And this is coming from a guy for whom Royce leaving would be a good thing.

Have him talk to blalock and stinson. Both were possible first rounders (most thought stinson was higher) and stinson is undrafted and blalock is 2nd round and still crying about everything. Not saying RW will drop like those two, but you never know when the hype is new.

Another year will put him on POY watch lists and solidify first round and move him into more solid position. This is when more recognition will help him I think.

Where's Eric Griffin from Campbell?? I posted something about Iowa's defense being terrible because they allowed him to go for 23 points/13 rebounds and Taco jumped down my throat claiming Eric Griffin "will be playing in the NBA". Funny, I don't see him anywhere in the top 100.

I wouldn't go by that guys list. Prior to the tourney he had neither Royce White nor CJ McCollum in his list. I don't think he knows what he's talking about.

That's my take as well, slipping to the 2nd round is bad news.

I was being facetious. I just thought it was funny that Taco swore up and down that Eric Griffin was a surefire NBA player yet his name isn't even popping up on the major NBA draft lists.

if white comes back, he will only raise his stock, possibly to a lottery pick. He has a chance to really make a run in the Ncaa's as well....hopefully he decides to stay......still has unfinished business here in ames

Agree. His stock will absolutly rise next year. No doubt Royce made a name for himself as well as Iowa State as a solid Basketball program again under Hoiberg.

My thoughts: You would have to think that with the season ISU just had, and a return of one of the most exciting players in the NCAA in Royce White, ISU will be ranked in the Top 25 from the get-go next year. ISU should stay the course as well with the talent we have coming back/plus key additions as well. Add all of that and also include Big 12 programming/ties with ESPN...one can imagine that they will want to feature Iowa State in numerous "Big Monday/Super Tuesday" national games next year since they will be predicted to be one if not "the" top team to beat in the conference next year.

This all will be good "pub" for Royce coming back next year. And by playing at a high level, his draft stock would surely rise next year, especially if the team plays at a hight level next year, which we all know it can and will under Hoiberg's leadership.

That is not what he said at all. He said he did not have a crystal ball, and it is hard to say what may happen. He said that some guys come back and hurt their stock, and others come back and really help their stock. He also said the dynamic of the team will change next year.......it will have a true point guard and other new "pieces". I think what he was saying there is that Royce's role will change next year....which may be good or bad for his NBA stock. I don't recall him saying anything about Royce being 4 years out of high school.

Why make stuff up?

Here is a link to the interview. It is in the last segment.....at about the 30 minute mark.

Personally, I think he could benefit himself next year in two areas. His jump-shot shooting and his defense. I think if he is projected as a late 1st round/tweener.......then it would also be smart to come back and improve his stock. Last year's draft was weak with the lockout and everything. This year's is loaded. I'm guessing right now that this draft will set a record for those players that declare and then back out before the draft. Also, as others have mentioned, the projections now don't include foreign players. Unless Royce makes it up to the top 12 or 15, I think he would be better off financially to go next year. He is old for his class already...but if he continues to improve his game in college and develops into his full potential......the NBA will still want him. They aren't going to turn away from a talent like him just because he is 22 years old next year. http://www.kxno.com/player/?station...odcast&program_id=murphnandy.xml&mid=21920721

I like Jeremy "Windmill" Lamb at #6 overall. Do NBA GM's even watch the players they're drafting or just pull names out of hats?

Jeremy Lamb has about every physical quality an NBA GM would want in a two guard. Watching UConn last season, I thought there was no question that Lamb would be a better pro than Kemba Walker and I still feel that way.

I've been saying all season if RW is in the teens or higher, he's gone. Not sure this is quite high enough yet.

I think he could be a better player with one more year here, but not sure if that necessarily raises his stock.

True. And NBA teams can afford the Red Bull to wake his *** up. Or crack. Or something.

wrong, it's not an age-based issue..the class will be weaker and even if Royce doesn't do as good he will still be a first rounder for 2013....most sites say he's 2013..jmo

Shhhh. Royce might hear you.

Honestly though, if he will go anywhere in the first round he should go. He has a lot of things he seems to want to accomplish in life and that NBA money will help. Take it while it is there.

I think RW has no where to go but up. If he is really going to be the 22nd pick this year, waiting until next year is the best option. You roll the dice a little on dropping to the 2nd round next year and missing the guarnateed $$$, but you have a much better chance to raise up in the draft and actually come out money ahead. If he somehow goes in the top10 after next year, he will make significantly more guaranteed $$$ over the next few years than he will if he goes 22nd this year.

Honestly hate seeing this. Don't get me wrong I love seeing ISU players projected in the first round, but not only selfishly because I want him to come back and do great things at ISU next year.. but I also think he would benefit pretty big from getting more NCAA experience and having Fred continue to help improve his shooting. It will be harder to get that experience from the bench in the NBA. Obviously the money would be nice for him short term, but coming back another year to improve your NBA stock to get drafted higher and help get you more ready to play will help a lot more long term.

Most mocks now have him mid to late first round. I am going on the assumption he will leave. He can work on his jump shot regardless of whether he stays at ISU or goes to the NBA.

Absolutely age based for NBA drafts. If he stays until next year he will be 22 at the time of draft. I bet you only 2 guys that are 22 will be drafted 1st round this year. NBA loves young guys that are prospects.

1year isn't going to make a difference..the benefits of a weak draft is greater then how old he is

Does RW risk injury? Look at Mbakwe for Minnesota, he may have just screwed himself forever. He'd be higher next year no doubt, but if he gets hurt, or his Anxiety issues become more worrisome, plus he's a year older. If he's guaranteed first round, you go. The difference between Mid-teen and 20's in the draft would be a few hundred thousand.

I put no value in draft projections after the top 10-12 picks. If you are projected at say 22, that means between 15-40 imo depending on who gets taken Especially when you have a special skill set like Royce, not all teams can find value in him.

The nba draft is such a crapshoot. You have kids like Jameer Nelson sky rocket after the tourney and then you have kids like John Wallace, a sure fire top 10 pick drop way down (luckily).

The other thing missing is the European players none of us have heard of. Unless a team says hey royce, if you come out we take you at pick such and such, I say he stays because its to much of a toss up.

Also, I say people cool on him a little as the tourney moves on without us. I think there will be less of a tourney buzz around him come mid April.

My assessment of the situation:

Royce does not appear to be a lottery lock. So, Fred will contact his connections on the teams projected to be on the edge of the lottery and through the end of the first round. If the vast majority of them have Royce very high or #1 on their list, Fred will advise Royce to go (and Royce will likely go). If it is unclear whether he will be a first round pick, Fred will advise Royce to stay (and Royce will likely stay).
