What if he can prove that he continually asked Tressel about whether his program was in compliance? He's not going to start an investigation if his head coach is telling him that everything is on the up and up.
There are compliance officials in the Ath Dept. It's their job to know. It's there boss' job to make certain that they are constantly on the alert for non-compliance. If Tressel is a liar, probable, then Smith should have been even more diligent. He had to be constantly suspicious because of the power in the oversight of the NCAA. Smith came to Columbus because of the Jim O'Brien basketball team problems. Smith was labelled as a "fixer." Tressel was not clean at Youngstown. The Clarett situation at OSU was under Tressel's watch. Clarett was from Youngstown. There will be a record of every question, every meeting, every internal inquiry. Smith will duck and dodge, but at the end of the day, it this is as bad as it's growing to be, then Smith will fall too. Two wrong men won't make it right. Gee won't take the fall for Smith. It'll be everyone man for himself.
Smith stood by his man in December. Looks like Smith threw him out with the dishwater this weekend. Smith has to be more vigilant as the boss.
A former player, a Columbus attorney now, started this whole thing by sending the emails to Tressel. A car dealer, an alleged drug dealer, is involved and under investigation. The former WR Small said his comments were twisted, about everyone broking NCAA rules, this past week. Kirk Herbstreit moved out of Columbus to TN because of the crazies.
All of this looks too suspicious.
There are 3 men, at least, having a bad Memorial Day weekend in Columbus.
This is a $150million per year train that's coming off the tracks.
