Matt Abdelmassih a new assistant?

I wasn't going after you or your figure of speech. I'm just saying I would have liked to get a gray-haired guy like Lutz to have on this staff.
I agree. It seems a bit risky to have all three staff members without head coaching experience. How could you not trust Fred though.

You ring up a good point about TJ. He's been doing this recruiting thing for a long time. As I understand it, these recruiters tend to put in terrible hours and are never home. I could see him wanting to do more coaching and maybe shifting a bit away from being the only recruiter. He probably has hope of being a head coach someday and having more actual coaching expirence would be useful for that.

This is correct.

People are not looking at the reality of the coaching world today. Assistants travel around all over to try to build resumes to get head coaching jobs.

TJ has proven that he can recruit at this level. He has a good reputation as a recruiter.

But in order for him to achieve his ultimate goal, which I would assume is to be a head coach at a D 1 school, he needs to expand his resume. We will see Fred give him more and more bench responsibities so he can fulfill his ambitions.

To reiterate the point made earlier, this assistant replaces McRoy, not Lutz.

Lutz's replacement will be a guy with lots of coaching experience. He will replace Lutz.

BTW does anybody know what McRoy ever did other than being in DeMarcus Phillups?

McRoy didn't bring in DP.

Recruiting-wise, I like the move. Coaching (X and O)-wise, it worries me. They're going from a combined probably 50 years of coaching experience (head and assistant) in Lutz and McRoy to closer to 8 with the two new hires. FH better give a big raise to Rutter.

I would have liked to see someone like Boylen hired, but if you are going to promote Matt A., the second guy pretty much needs to be a minority.

People are putting way too much emphasis on the need to have a good x and o's coach. College basketball, even in the elite level jobs, is filled with guys who are not good in game coaches. Getting guys that can recruit and bring in talent is much, much more important. And Brad Stevens is a good coach, but without future NBA players in Hayward and Mack his teams would look a lot like Lickliter's Iowa teams.

The only problem is that he is an extremely green coach. TJ and Fred can recruit. They've shown that. Lutz brought a lot to the coaching aspect and adding Matt adds basically nothing coaching-wise to a head coach with only 1 year under his belt. Who is Fred going to learn from? I'm not a fan.
What's the problem. First Transfer U. Now Recruit U. We can play Morgan ball and still win with talent.

You may be right, but this would seem to fit the mold that Hoiberg had last year. He seems to want 2 hungry, ruthless recruiters. Obviously, Matt doesn't have the recruiting experience, but he is young and I could see him being good at it.
Maybe Fred wants to do more coaching and less recruiting. Maybe TJ will be leaving next year.

Recruiting we seem to be close to even to the last staff with Lutz and McRoy, maybe a little behind, but in terms of X&O's it looks like we are severely behind now with Matt and Mann.

We have to remember that there's no way that TJ will stick around forever. Maybe Fred would prefer to develop Matt as an assistant and give him some experience. That way he can become our ace recruiter when TJ takes a big job. If we have some success if the next couple of years, it won't take long for TJ to get some calls.

where is this idea coming from that fred doesn't know x & o's and "needs help." its really amazing he had the kind of career in college and the nba with being completely cluess about how to run plays. i guess he is the mayor afterall.....

There were a handful of times he'd defer to Lutz last year during timeouts. He just doesn't have the coaching experience but I'm sure he'll learn quickly and be a solid X & O's guy eventually. It just would be nice if he had some help over the next couple of years.

I always thought Lutz was around to help Freddy juggle responsibilities and serve as a mentor. It was not x's and o's was it?

A little from column A, a little in column B. On many occasion the players were directed towards Lutz during a TO. However, when a TO was called and ISU had possession at their own basket, they went right to Fred and his bag of tricks.

Fred Hoiberg is good at everything he does. Everything. He has the gift. I'm sure he got as much out of Lutz as he needs. It would be nice to still have him around, but we all knew it wasn't forever.
