Good story on Pompey

Just thought I would pass along a pretty funny story that Ken Pope told last night. For any of you that haven't had the pleasure to meet Coach Pope he is an absolute gem. The guy has coached Eric Dickerson, Craig James, Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas just to name a few. And he can TELL a story!!

He says Pompey came on his visit and 4 of the coaches were at Hickory Park waiting for Pompey to show up. They were sitting strategically to talk to the kid and Pompey shows up.

First thing he says is "Coach Rhoads I just want to tell you something before I sit down and eat your food. There is absolutely no way I will be coming to Iowa State."

Pope says the coaches are floored and are basically giving each other looks like what the hell do we do now. As they are about to say something Pompey pipes back in with

"Oh, and Coach wanted to tell you one more thing. It's great to be a CYCLONE!!"

Pope says in his 30 years or whatever he has never had a kid pull a joke off like that. Much better coming from Pope directly, but cool insight into a new Cyclone.

Wow...I bet some of those coaches had to go check their pants after that one.

I imagine their faces to be similar to the one of the child in your avatar...
:twitcy:

On point, kid sounds like he at least has a heck of a sense of humor. I like it.

I love this kid already. Good stuff, and it was a great atmosphere to visit with the coaches. Good timing after recruiting is over (except for one I hope), and I imagine the coaches are about as relaxed now as they are all year.

If you watched the 30 for 30 SMU special you got to see a glimspe of a young Kenneth Pope.
I still have it on my dvr from before. I watched a few times...thought it was fascinating. I did not know to look for him, and I have no idea what he looks like. What segment was he on?

I don't recall exactly. I think it was towards the middle or latter half. It's just a few seconds of him on the sidelines. I had to back up my dvr to make sure I saw what I thought I saw. Then I looked up his coaching profile to make sure it was him for sure.

When I was sitting adjacent to them at breakfast the next morning. There was not a lot of laughter at that table just trivial details. (he asked for #99) CPR asked for a pen, the two of them walked away together. It was a done deal before that morning. My original thread was deleted, when I posted the next morning. This is cool to me because I sat close to Leonard Johnson when he was being recruited, on one of my trips to Ames. I have another favorite player to watch.
GO STATE.

If he does make it here I hope someone keeps him away from Vesuvius on Duff. Don't need any meltdowns.
