5 for 5

When did it change to 5 free throws? It used to be 5 different spots on the floor, something like from each baseline, from each wing, and 1 free throw. Never saw anyone come very close to getting them all.

I believe this is the first year it is free throws. I saw a couple people hit 3 or 4 from the various spots, but it was rare. I would think it would be easier to make 5 free throws so I am surprised they made the change.

I saw the guy make all 5 years ago against Mizzou when Norm Stewart was coaching. It was amazing.

I was listening to this game over the radio and it happened while Pete Taylor was talking during the halftime. All of the sudden, you could hear a huge roar from the crowd that essentially drowned out Pete's voice. When it finally ended, he explained that someone had just won the car from Benson motors.

It's happened once, i remember 'cause i was there. Early 1990s, against K-State (edit: i think). I think it's the only time since.

I was the guy that was minding the mic for Ed for that one so I had a front row seat for it. That is the only time anyone ever won it.

When they first set up shoot 5 for 5 it was going to be 5 free throws but someone thought it would be too easy so they made it the five spots on the floor. I guess that wasn't too easy as they only gave away one car during all of those years.

Mizzou or K-State? Maybe my memory is going...

As i recall, the guy who made all five worked for the Parks library, was in his 40s or early 50s. Didn't look like the type of guy who'd make 'em all, but he calmly knocked them down.

I couldn't tell you who we were playing but I remember that he hit the rim on maybe only one of them. You are exactly right that he calmly knocked them down.

So, I live in CO what's the contest? 5 free throws in a row and you get a car? That sounds pretty sweet!

You get five tries to make free throws. Make all 5 and you get the truck. So, yes, it's 5 in a row ONLY if you make all five shots.

A club I was in in HS had the 5-5 as a fundraiser. Had 5 businesses in town chip in 100 bucks each on the off chance someone would win and a bunch of other businesses chip in for shots 1-4.
Went a few years without a grand prize winner, until one of the guys from school in the NFL made all 5. He donated the $500 back to the club. Turned out to be a really good fundraiser for us.

Were you the guy who refused to move up closer? I applaud you for that. I think I would find what's his name more distracting. Danny be the ball... be the ball Danny...your not being the ball. STFU and let him shoot!

Oh, yeah, that was annoying. Pretty obvious that they're willing to be distracting in order to keep that car. The odds are so far against participants anyway with the environment there, Tron should feel free not to be such a distraction.

I also applaud the guy that didn't move up. No gain but full embarrassment.

I was there for the guy that made them all as well. Wasn't he a former walk-on on the ISU basketball team or something to that effect? Dude had a perfect shot.

What ever happened to Ed? Did he pass away? I used to love when he'd come out riding a unicycle for the really big games. He was kind of a symbol of what Hilton used to be for me. Lou from KGGO wasn't bad in taking over for him, but it's never been the same without Ed.

Kid almost did it last year. Looked like he was about 10 or 11. I think they called his dad's seat # and he let his son have the moment. Then the guy hit 4 shots. It was a fun one to watch, much better than most of them.

For those that don't know, "Ed" refers to Ed Gagnier. Ed was the men's gymnastics coach before the sport was dropped years ago. Look up in the rafters of Hilton to see the banners for three National Championships in four years (early 70's). Incredible achievement by a great guy.

Tron is just awful at this.

Agreed, and i love tron on the radio\videos with chris. The 'are you ready' seems really forced.

But... its still probably the best of our gameday promotions. At least it doesnt suck the energy out of the building. Better than:

Pump up the burrito\pasta
Random Cyclone Alley worthlessness
Cy's locker room best dressed fan-how about looking for those who actually did something cool to dress up, and not just some <10 year old kid whose parents just bought them stuff. Make it a contest for the arena, who can get picked, rather than just some random kid.
Cy's Jukebox- That guy is painfully embarrassing, and its the same 3 old, old songs every week.
Smile Cam\Macho Man Cam... ugh

"Hello, Everybody!"

The same down to earth nice guy you saw when he had the mic in his hand. Truly a good guy.

Oohhhhhh, this thread brings back memories. I was that guy. Happened in late January 1995 at halftime of the K-State game. I was 49 then. Didn't work for the library, though. Worked for a department that was closed down a few years ago.

The rotation at that time was baseline, wing, free throw, wing, baseline, all 15-foot shots. Yeah, I swished four of the five. The only one that didn't was the foul shot, which hit the rim approximately 27 times before it dropped through.

Somebody on this thread mentioned nerves. Ohhhh, yes. Normally, I'm a high anxiety guy when I eat my cereal in the morning, but for some reason, on that afternoon, I was totally calm. When I stepped up for the first shot, I just put everything out of my mind. Complete blank. Told myself I was shooting in my driveway. If I had even once thought about the implications of what I was doing, I would have hit the shot clock.

I want to give a special shout-out to Benson Motors. They were terrific, and of course, they were pretty excited. I was told they sold 19 cars the following weekend.

You'll probably be sad to learn then that Benson Motors didn't survive the car industry meltdown last year.

Sounds like you need to start a camp for halftime promotional giveaway participants. Seen quite a few fieldgoal kicker and throw the football into a box contestants with some definite issues.
