Hoiberg Coaching (at UNI)

This game really couldn't have gone worse for us. The way the refs were calling the game really helped UNI control the tempo. You have to pressure guards and make them try to create. By calling the ticky-tack fouls, UNI was able to handle the ball without really trying to do anything. Also, I noticed whenever ISU scored, UNI would play around with the ball before throwing it in. These types of things add up and it is blatant delay of game. I noticed this type of crap with McDermott as our coach. We would fumble the ball around, then throw it to the ref, then switch inbounders, then throw it back to the ref, and then the play would start. It's ridiculous and I wish someone would call them on it, but I'm afraid it isn't anything illegal.

Rambling over.

1. I think the response after a timeout shows that he is demanding attention in the huddle and that is a good thing.

2. I am guessing the plan was to get Jake the ball late, but it's tough against a team that wants nothing more than DG to shoot it. Hopefully we'll figure it out.

3. Fred isn't going to be a yeller and a screamer. Give that dream up and accept it.

UNI, and the officials, dictated the speed of this game from the start. So yes, Fred was outcoached tonight for sure.

Fred really needs to get on DG when he notices that he's not hitting his shots. Fred has basically said that this is DG's Team, but that doesn't mean he should let him just do stupid things all night.

And I'd like to see a bit more enthusiasm out of Fred. Those refs deserved and earful several times tonight. Stand up and fight for your guys every now and then Fred.

Hoiberg had no control over officiating, and even if he had got in their ears a bit more, I don't think it would've helped a whole lot. But I think we might see more animation in the future, at least I hope so anyways. Remember it's still only his 7th game of actually Head Coaching.

I'll be surprised if we ever see that much...we didn't hire a yeller and screamer.
I was thinking a good CyBookie event would be on how many games before CFH gets T'd up
I thought he already has..i was at a game and somebody got a T and the ref was standing by CFH...so i just assumed it was fred but i guess i am wrong

The staff took their medicine tonight. I've been worried all season long that our lack of plays and interests in at least trying to get the ball inside would bite us in the ***.

Sure enough, UNI just played around perimter on defense and we didn't even try to work something inside.

You can say we don't have the horses to do anything inside, but that's irrelevant because you still have to at least try. We missed a lot of shots inside ten feet, but they were all contested and pretty much came from breaking down guys on the perimeter and penetrating. There's got to be a much improved focus on working the ball into the post.

No, that was the phantom taunting technical. Scotty was yelling something to JVB after hitting a three, and the ref thought he was taunting the opponents' bench. The ref waved the tech off.

OH ok i remember it was after a shot and i was so confused as to why our team would have gotten a technical

I think Fred should have suited up.:twitcy:

As they say,
You are never as good as you look
You are never as bad as you look

It is early and youth tends to be inconsistent.

is it just me or did JVB not seem into it.. to me he kinda seemed tired course when you play 90% of the time you would be

It wasn't just you. The most disturbing part was when he picked up his 4th foul. Now, granted it's been a long time since I've played organized basketball. But, I knew when I got my 4th foul, I would do everything I could to avoid eye contact with the coach and just hope he didn't know that it was my 4th so I could keep playing. JVB looked over at the ISU bench, holding up four fingers, like, "take me out. I have four fouls." And this is one of our senior leaders. Greg's players are almost out of elibility...

We have what, one under classman that plays major minutes? I don't want to sound negative, but we start three seniors a junior and a freshman. And our PG has been starting for four years and has the ball in his hands about 95% of our possessions. Early might be an excuse, but our team is older than most of the teams we will play...

I think this is especially true. We showed our age quite a bit tonight. I am not sure on the call but supposedly CFH had said Do not Foul, and immediately a foul was called on ISU with less than a minute to go.

The shots were not going in. They had good looks but didnt hit. Blame what you want it all came down to shooting. UNI did play good D and played their style, that is something Fred will have to firgure out how to fix. I would bet Mac told Jake how to beat ISU. Another disapointing thing was not getting the ball to Ejim more, when he had the ball he did good things with it.

And who do we bring off the bench? How long does it take to pick up a new system? Our early season seems to have clouded the vision of some fans. BTW, where were we picked to finish in the Big XII this year?

Foul trouble and shooting the ball like crap lost this game. CFH did everything he needed to do. UNI may have dictated the tempo more than we would have liked but your players have got to hit shots when they get good looks...we had good looks all night that didn't fall. Sucks.

This. DG was 7 for 23 from the floor... ouch. It seemed like he was the only one that could do anything with the ball. If he hits just a few more of those shots, then it's a different game. He did have some great takes to the bucket, but they just wouldn't fall. I was amazed at how fast UNI could get back into their defense and get it setup. Definitely a well coached ballclub. I was at the game and was really unimpressed with UNI. We REALLY should've won this game. We just shot lousy and bigs got into foul trouble. I also didn't see the intensity that I've seen in earlier games. Ejim was extremely frustrated and they really took him out of his game as well. All I can say is I'm glad we don't run that half court offense anymore, this might've been one of the most boring games I've been to in a LONG time. No meltdown here, though... we'll be fine. We need to bounce back and play well on Saturday. Hopefully tonight was a learning experience for our young team & coach.

I thought that Railey did a great job on defense tonight, and really helped swing the game when he played in the 2nd half. I liked how our defense played with JVB sitting and Railey playing. If they had more front-line scoring tonight, i could see Railey getting more time.

I'm with you on this one. Railey altered shots and changed how UNI played in the low post. JVB didn't.

Fred will go through a learning curve as a brand new coach. I think there is a lot that he will learn (and quickly) from losses like this.

I would say 99% of Clone fans would have taken a close loss @UNI and 6-1 record, two months ago and been ecstatic about it.

Considering the lack of depth/talent that we have available this year, to lose a close one on the road to a Tourney team from last season, I'm very optimistic about our future.

Did anyone else see him freak after his 5th foul and kick a chair as hard as he could into the second row? I think we should have gotten him the ball much more in this game. He was obviously more athletic than anyone guarding him and he did a few nice things when he was able to drive.

A typical road game for a team who is at best average. Have we seen any thing different the past 6 years?Until our talent level increases this is what we will be getting on the road, and I believe it will get better, but tonight and probably this year this is what we can expect...............now team go prove me wrong, please.

Actually yes. In Wayne's last year we beat a ranked Texas team on the road. That team didn't make post season so they would be considered average.

The talent level on this team is better than the talent level of the 2004-2005 team man for man (that team made the NCAA tourney 2nd round and lost to UNC).
