I wonder how his experience in evaluating talent will translate to recruiting college kids. This will be interesting to say the least.
Can you imagine the PR nightmare if this doesn't work out and we have to fire the most popular player in school history a few years down the road?
That said...the thought of the Mayor coaching ISU is exciting. It will get the fanbase fired up again, that's for sure.

And you cant say nurse wasnt a GMac guy. Theyre old buddies, and made a big deal of that last week.
JP must have felt strongly he could do it....or the scenario you mention, the unthinkable would happen. God I hope this works.
McDermott had lots of coaching experience and look how he turned out... even recruiting he couldn't keep players. McDermott was supposedly good with X's and O's but was awful with Jims and Joes. Hoiberg can't do any worse than McDermott did.

If you're not a fan of this hire, you are quite simply, just not an ISU fan. I think this is the homerun we needed, now if he can retain Nurse we'll be back in the Big12 mix in no time!

FWIW - Hoiberg is the overwhelming favorite in the DMR poll. He meets the formula JP announced before the Mac hire in terms of character and Iowa connections. There has previously been discussion about him coaching at ISU, in some capacity. As an NBA player he may be able to recruit kids who want to play in the NBA. Did he have player-coach responsibilities in the NBA?

********. I'm an ISU fan, so i want our PROGRAM to have the best chance to succeed. When you have 15 coaches calling, a number of whom according to Thompson have put 6-8 teams in the NCAA tournament, you dont hire someone with ZERO coaching experience.
