If Mac jets for Creighton today, Jamie needs to focus on keeping TJ Otzelberger.

He's the key to keeping Melvin Ejim, DeMarcus Phillips, Jordan Railey and Elgin Cook. Plus, he's the guy who got McKnight and Godfrey in town over the weekend.

You have to do anything at all to keep TJ Otzelberger. If he says, the commits likely do as well.

Crap, guess one bright spot for us would be too much to ask. Oh well, year one, again... Lets build something this time!

Maybe Pollard is behind this whole thing. Pushing Greg to find something else so we don't have to buy him out if we continue to drift. I like Greg but it's hard to argue he has been anything but unimpressive at best.

Obviously, you're closer to the situation than I am, C-Dubya. You've got insight that I don't have into the personalities involved; HOWEVER, isn't focusing on retaining Otz a mistake?

That would be like the White Star Line making sure that the First Mate of the Titanic got a job on their next luxury liner....because at least now he knows where all the icebergs are.

If the new coaching staff has a place for him, well, let's consider it then. Another problem with retaining him would be that we'd have to retain him for at least 2 years, or else we'd just have to worry about all these guys transferring when he finally does leave. I think we'd be better off trying to find a coach who has the wherewithal to convince GMac recruits that they will be better off under his leadership.

You can't make a good head coach keep an assistant from a prior staff. You can encourage it but you can't make him...if he's a good coach.

That would put Mac in the company of the lowest-class Cyclones of all time. Given the timing of Grayer's hiring, it's not like Mac didn't know this Creighton thing was in the works. These things don't just happen in an hour.

Mac can literally not step foot in Ames again. He screwed the ISU family from top to bottom. I just saw his sister in law with her ISU stuff displayed proudly at a softball tournament. I wonder what she'll have next weekend. She's a really nice lady, by the way.

This is totally misplaced focus. The focus should be on getting the best possible HC...period. You do that and you have no troubles keeping any recruits that you want to in the fold for next year. It's not like we have some sort of top 5 recruiting class coming in or something...jeesh.

Obviously you have to get a head coach. But from what I know, Otz is on contract for multiple years at ISU. He is the key to holding onto like five different players through a coaching change. That could be the difference in Iowa State being successful in two years compared to four.

I say we hire a head coach and let him bring in his assistants and let the chips fall where they may.

I am not really interested in bringing back LE, Floyd, etc.

I think that if JP can find a solid HC to come in, he will be able to keep any recruit. You can come to ISU, play right away and not sit out a year. It is all going to come down to the new coach that comes in, not if an assistant sticks around.

We'll have to agree to disagree. As I said earlier, it's not like we have some world beater incoming class here.

And, personally, I believe that a top quality coach can turn around a program...even a major trainwreck like GM is leaving us with...in short order...2 years...it's been done before and it can be done again.

Look at it this way...its not like we are going to have a mass exodus of players if Mac leaves... The are already gone
