We need answers!!!!

Folks, just have patience. It takes like 5 to 10 years to get your athletes in the program and for them to understand the system. We will get there. I mean it is greedy to think ISU should make the NCAA tourney more than a couple times in a decade.

Greg will get it turned around. We are showing signs of progress.

Take off the rose colored glasses, put down the bottle and try opening your eyes. This team has talent and underachieves, has no fun, is sloppy, and does not believe in itself. This is a train wreck, and if he is kept here will gradually get worse. Nebraska and Colorado are on a better path than we are, which is not saying much.

I'm sure that, if you have the $2.5 million needed for buyout, as well as the amount needed as a salary increase for a new coach, JP's all ears.

The same ears that had no problem paying $1.5 mil. to get rid of the previous coach who had made post season every year but one...while at the same time giving this coach a lenghty contract extension before he proved anything?

Were statewide budget cuts being put into effect when WM was fired? No. And another coach has been fired since then, so I don't really think you are seeing the big picture here. Extending McDermott's contract was a strong fiscal move.

Gotta disagree with that.

Okay. You can disagree with whatever you want, even without any supporting evidence. McDermott is still nowhere near the level of pay of the coaches who people here think we should have. Buying out the contract would have cost even more. Extending the contract of an employee who is already making below national average is obviously much more cost-effective than the cost of a buyout AND a huge pay raise for a new employee.

He was being sarcastic.

At the same time, it isn't very cost effective to have a crappy basketball program. We could be looking at a Carver-esque situation here in a year or two if a change isn't made. I'm pretty sure that with Iowa's horrifyingly bad attendance, it actually costs them more money to play a Men's basketball game than it makes. That's mind blowing. We can't have a "revenue" sport become a money pit. Basically, there are a lot of serious financial implications of any move by the AD here.

It has created a situation out balance between needing to show faith in an unproven coach, yet leaving options open. This decision may come back to show great fiscal cost.

There is no other D1 coach, with this record, with this length of contract.

So, given the current state of being not sure where this program is headed, and having no options on the table due to the financial constraints due to the contract we are in, you could make the argument it is the worst fiscal decision Jamie has made. As bad as the extension given Chiz, which we got lucky on.

I want MdD to succeed (and support Pollard, but I do not have to support every decision), but the fact is things are getting tenuous.

When I go to dinner with 4 donor couples who have had season tickets each for 8-10 years average and I hear 3 out of 4 are considering pulling up stakes, "Houston we have a problem".

The possible benefits of bringing in a new coach who can having winning basketball at Iowa State within 3 years or so would probably outweigh the costs of the buyout. This is assuming 2 things...1) McDermott will never get it done, and 2) Bringing in a new guy would get it done. It's a risky call, but if JP is of the opinion that McDermott will not get it done here (which is my opinion) he should start looking elsewhere. It would be a horrible investment to keep McDermott here if JP feels like he will never get the job done.

Again, that's also not taking into account the economy and the fact that we've had four coaches fired from the "main" sports within the last ten years. At some point you are pragmatic financially and stand behind your decision. Ticket sales are down for many people because of economic reasons, and no coaching change is going to make people have jobs.

Agree. There is alot of things to factor into it. Glad the decision is not mine.

There are many things to factor in, that is correct, and know one knows what the right answer or decision will be at this point.

However, my original disagreement was the conclusion that this long of contract was a wise fiscal decision. Clearly it limits future options, and could result in greater costs.

The point is the question is that question of was it a fiscal benefit is open for fair debate and disagreement.

I'm glad some sense has worked it's way in to the thread. No one is debating the product on the court this year.

Financially it's an expensive undertaking to buy him out. Like it or not, it's what we have.

Being able to guarantee the next coach will equal or surpass Mac in W's and increase Hilton attendance is far from guaranteed.

That is why I'm attempting to hold on and hope for things to improve.

Nothing is ever guaranteed... but its pretty hard to do worse than 10th, 11th, 10th, and (currently) 10th.

As for attendance, those numbers get tricky. the next coach could match mcd's current numbers, but considering that attendance is going to start dropping off if McD doesnt turn things around quickly, itd still be an improvement.

I agreed....PRIME example coaches need to be paid as per performance

McDermott was hired at about the same wage that the SMU coach makes, so this may not be a great anti-Mac argument.

People are absolutely entitled to their own opinions about where the team should be, his performance, etc., but it's unquestionably a huge financial risk at this point to make a move.

5 to 10 years to get the players in the system? You do realize they graduate after 4, right? By the 3rd or 4th year, you should have your guys in the program and understanding the system - well that were if there appeared to be a system.

And this from the biggest GMac supporter from day 1 until about November 15th. Incredibly person, but not a good fit for ISU apparently.
I think he was being facetious.

you made some valid points concerning the economic issues that we are having. I can see why ISU would not release him

There are still a lot of games left to be played this season, and then we have the whole summer to complain about the coaches. Some here need to pace themselves.
