Final drive vs KU

My biggest beef was going to the endzone with 1:30 left. Why would you WANT to score and give KU 1:30 to operate? I agree run the ball, get inside the 10 with less than :30 and see what happens.

You would trade 6 points (plus possibly 1 or 2 more) at 1:30 for no points at 0:30?

You talk like ISU is presently some kind of dominating team that can run clock and score at will when they've taken enough time off. This situation was against KU, a top 20 team, in Lawrence, not NDSU at Jack Trice.

I would want to score at 1:30 left in the game, because it would give me the lead, which is a good thing to have near the very end of the game.

I don't care how much time is left on the clock, it's Herman's job to punch it into the endzone. Burnham's job is to keep KU out of the endzone. The offense can't do all the work, and the defense can't do all the work. They have to find a medium somewhere.

Sorry...I didn't like the call to the end zone either. 99% sure we would have had to watch KU move down the field and win it at the end. I'm ok with the rest of the play calling on the final drive, but we needed to work it so if we were gonna score it was with under a minute left and hopefully closer to 30sec or less.
KU would have only needed a FG to tie or win.

Here's the only beef I had with calls on Saturday - and it's an extremely minor one at that. Hardly worth mentioning. But I have to ask... why do we stunt SO much on the DLine?

I'm willing to be told that Coach Burnham is trying anything and everything to even mimic a pass rush. But our stunts are so pathetically slow and ineffective, that I think it actually gives the QB even more time. Our 4 dlinemen aren't getting pressure anyway, and are now spending their first motion going side to side instead of up field.

By the second quarter, I was just begging to give it up.

But again, Wally is probably at his wits end trying to do something (without constant blitzing ... which doesn't work either)

I had the same thought. There was no chance we were going to hold them for 1:30 without at least a field goal.

If you're so knowledgable about play calling how come you aren't a D1 Offensive Cooridnator somewhere 22?

I am sick of this wouldva shouldva couldva crap that is dominating these boards today. Seriously folks, MOVE ON! We are 3-3 and have shown some big strides from where we were at this time last season so can't we just accept it and move on? The team moved on from the KSU game judging by the performance against KU, it's time we as fans do the same and move on after each win and loss. You can't change the result, you can only look to improve on what you did wrong.

Exactly my thoughts. Second guessing play calling is a wast of time and effort. Time to focus our efforts on Baylor.

The deep ball on first down was a pre snap read and the correct one. You had tight coverage on the outside with no safety help, a good Qb attacks that every time. The safety slid over right before the snap but a good throw and catch is a touchdown there.

Rhoads talked about the pass rush and how getting to Reesing was an absolute necessity for this game.

I hadn't seen much stunting up front up to this game, and so it's gonna take time for the light to click on with them. The interior linemen had been used as stop gaps the last two years so Wally/Shane I'm sure are working to teach those two how to get involved in the pass rush

I guess the only other option is a straight-up bull rush, which if the D-line is undersized, isn't going to work either. With a stunt, perhaps you at least get a chance to slip through a gap...

It was also mentioned in another thread by a poster watching a DVR of the game that on this play, Darks had come wide open with no defenders around him.

I suppose, but that kind of leads into my "by the second quarter" comment, because it just wasn't happening.

Regardless, I wasn't disappointed very much aside from our kicking woes. Our O played easily it's best game of the year. The D lived up to what most of us expected from the outset. They aren't going to be that good, let's hope for some TOs and a few stops - and the O will have to outscore against the better opponents.

Pretty much the way the game went down. KU just had a little too much firepower on O for us to overcome.

It was a pretty quick drop and throw, so I am guessing he appeared open after the ball had already been thrown.

I don't disagree and there really isn't one call I hated. I am just frustrated our best weapon got just one touch in the final sequence.

What should people talk about then Sat-Wed? Fans don't have to move on as quickly as players. I would Imagine PR and Herman may have asked themselves the same questions at film on Sunday.

Ugh, I hate posts like these. You take the points when you can. Don't be picky because you left too much time on the clock. We didn't even score and your ******** that we would have left too much time left on the clock. I would much rather score a TD with 1:30 left than not score at all.

Actually some stunts are called to help stop the run with less guys in the box. A good o-line will pick up even a good stunt on a pass play. Even a really good o-line will sometimes struggle with stunts on run plays.
