It makes it harder as a casual fan to follow a sport where the clock is based on vibes.

Imagine a last minute NFL/CFB drive where everyone kept looking at the ref to see if the game was over or not. Or the clock is at zero, but the Cyclones are driving, and at the 3 yard line, so the ref hasn't ended the game yet.

Just keep watching until the ref blows his whistle, problem solved.

Why are you applying clock rules from football to soccer? The point is that they want the game to end with a team making a play, whether that’s offense or defense. They don’t want to end the game analyzing whether the ball left a guy’s finger tips with 0.1 or 0.0 seconds.

Get over it
I'm already over it. I'm not asking soccer to change, but it's still dumb. I've watched a ton of World Cup, and for the most part it's been fun.

2026 CyHawk game prediction.......
Trailing 14-13, Iowa takes possession with a minute left. 3 minutes of game time later, they kick a game winning FG. Such a beautiful sport....

More like Iowa takes over with 3 min left, then 40 minutes of actual time including 15 minutes of commercial breaks later the game ends.

Give me the running clock over all the commercial breaks that come with clock stoppages any day of the week. Going to football games might be fun again if 60 minutes of game didn't take 3 1/2 hours.

The defending was suspect at times sure, but the strategy to just be content with Argentina teeing off on goal for 40 minutes was let's just say questionable.
England has done this a few games already. Playing not to lose instead of playing to win. Stupid to do this with only a 1 goal lead and 40 minutes remaining.

It's not like soccer doesn't have it's own stoppages. Free kicks take like 2-3 minutes to set up. Corners can take a minute. Every foul is a stoppage. Less than American football, for sure, but there are still a ton of breaks in the actual play.
