Hallice Cooke on Prohm

He reached the Elite 8 in 2023 which is further than we have been since 2000... They also were 1 point away from a Final 4 in that game

That team you want to proclaim as "big time" - the 2022-23 team - was a 6-seed with a 24-13 (14-6) record that had them finish 3rd in the Big East. And while they did beat (3) Baylor in the second round, they avoided (2) Arizona because (15) Princeton knocked them off... and advanced to the Sweet 16, where Creighton beat them.

Even that team is exactly what I labeled them - a good team (not "big time") - that happened to get hot at the right time and get a little bit of luck along the way to make a memorable run in the tournament.

I’m always impressed the lengths people go to prove how “right” they are. I mean, some feel they were big time, some don’t, but no one’s keeping score on this sight about who’s right or wrong (I think anyway).

My point exactly - TJ isn’t the TJ as we know him now if he doesn’t leave ISU and learn how to be the TJ he is now.
It goes without saying that the assistant coaches TJ gets are likely all different as well in that hypothetical situation. The truth is, no one has any idea what that looks like. I'm just glad for the TJ we've got.

Has there ever been another coach who simply just didn't have "it" like Steve Prohm at ISU? It didn't feel right from the start, had moments where it was like "ok this might work" but then ultimately was a massive dud that cratered the program.

Cratered? That’s a little hyperbolic.

Greg was a good hire at the time, had won with UNI and was a likable guy. I enjoyed his post game interviews with Eric and John on the way home as he gave much better insight and answers than Wayne ever did. I think most people wanted to see him succeed here but for 1 reason or another he could just not catch a break. The Wesley Johnson situation was shady AF at the time too and really hurt us, Lucca's eligibility battle as well. I chatted with Walters and CW in the P&L one night at the Big 12 tourney when Greg was coach and without saying anything too specific John basically said there were a lot of things going on behind the scenes beyond anyone's control that has hurt Greg's ability to win here that fans were not aware of. If I had to guess he probably was referring to some of the handlers tampering with our best players at the time trying to get them to leave.

I've never held any negative feelings towards Greg and his tenure here. Just turned out to be a bad fit at the time and had other cirmstances working against him. He's obviously done well at Creighton and give him credit for taking that job and not having to force JP's hand to fire him and pay his buyout. That was a classy thing for him to do as if he thought he had a chance to stay at ISU longer I am guessing his son Doug would have committed to play at ISU. Not getting Harrison Barnes to commit was probably the nail in the coffin for his tenure here. He did bring in some decent talent in Wesley Johnson, Mike Taylor, Diante Garrett, Lucca, Brackins, Scotty Christopherson, Jamie Vanderkeken, Justin Hamilton, and Marquis Gilstrap all had moments as Cyclones. I am guessing that Ejim likely committed to ISU while Greg was still the coach too?
I always liked Jiri Hubalek as well

I don't know....I would classify 2020-21 as cratered / disaster / calamity....whatever, but it couldn't really get much worse.

It was a disaster that's for sure. But having only 6 guys to practice most times, maybe 7 on a road games and no one in Hilton to see you play didn't really help.

Yeah it wasn’t good but when I think the use of the word crater, it implies not recovering. It was bad albeit a different environment that year.

Iowa State recovered quickly the next year.

Hyperbolic in a "long term effect" sense.

Completely accurate in regards to what was happening in those seasons.

Went from having multiple NBA types to being a team that other teams could treat like a bye game essentially in two seasons.

He absolutely crashed the plane into the ******* mountain.

We just recovered so fast that I could see quibbling with the term "cratered" which IMO implies a long term devastation. You can't do any worse than Prohm's last year, IMO.

Totally agree. Not like Jameel was some sort of saint. Im glad I don’t have random porn vids showing up on twitter from following him.

Hallice Cooke we barely knew you.
I don't know about you, but I loved following the on and off relationship drama between Jameel and Seanna Johnson from the women's team. They seemed to break up and get back together every other week and when she'd break up with him, he'd take to twitter to beg for her back.
