*** Official #5 IOWA STATE vs TCU Game(Day) Thread ***

I actually think he should have been given a shot. We have nobody with his dribble drive capability.
Defenders are already sagging off our supposed shooters. Nelson will be driving into a wall of bodies until somebody other than Milan starts hitting shots with some consistency.

Just a horrible, horrible loss, the worst I have seen this year. This is not like the KU game where they were on fire, TCU was horrible much of the game, and ISU was worse. No movement on offense, to much one on one type of play. 2nd worst turnover number of the season, and just a complete lack of effort. This team gave up a 10/12 point run at the end, plus two other runs by TCU of over 10 points. You just cannot allow teams to go on a run like that over and over.
The effort of the team all night was shown in the last turnover, TCU just hit their first 3 pointer of the 2nd half, we are down one, and we get a pass picked off right out in front for an easy breakaway lay-up. Not a sharp pass, but another lazy pass like we are just going through the motions.
This team has too much senior leadership and talent to play like we did last night, and games like last night are why this team will struggle when everything is on the line.
I’m not sure there is much senior leadership when things start going bad.

Sure did not look like it last night which is a problem when you are starting as many 4th year seniors as we are. I say it in jest, one would almost think ISU was throwing that game away and the game was fixed. Do I believe that, no, but I could see where some people could think it was, as poorly as we played.

That last turnover out of the timeout wasn't about effort. It was about focus and execution. The play is off from the start because they were being physical with Momcilovic, which threw off the timing. Instead of realizing that the play was off, Lipsey stared it down and forced the pass even when it was obvious it was covered.

This team appears to be soft when teams get aggressive and physical. Some of that is because we lack elite talent and size on offense. Lipsey can't shoot and can be pressured. Toure can't shoot and throws a few terrible passes every game. Jefferson is a poor ball handler in traffic. Momcilovic can be bothered by strength. Buchanan and Pleta are basically non threats. We have to share the ball. We're never going to be an elite offensive team driving one on one.

Listening to the podcast after the game, the talk is because we don't move the ball enough, that is why we didn't score. Generally yes but we are trying to pass. We are getting pressured and pushed out. Seems to me the more we pass, the more we are turning the ball over (sans Jefferson going hero ball).

How people are beating our defense is driving past our man, then skipping it cross court for the open 3. We don't have anybody that can drive past the guy consistently except for Jefferson and Nelson. Nelson doesn't play (thanks TJ, Sincerely Demarion Watson) and you are holding your breath with Jefferson.

Yeah DW is just lighting it up at North Texas right?

Haven't looked. But based on your comment he is not. But when he came in for us, he produced a spark, even if it was a few minutes to grab a couple rebounds, make a couple defensive stops. Just looking for a spark off the bench. TJ plays his usual 8 guys, whether we are blowing teams out by 30 or struggling with inferior teams.

DW did that like twice unless Ward was out, then he got more minutes with Omaha.

Otherwise he didn't do much and couldn't guard the 3 or 4 on ball.

The legend of him lives on I guess.

Agreed here, it’s the TJ fade in February into March when it matters
Decided to waste 5 minutes seeing what the data shows on this:

2026: 1-3 against the spread in February so far
2025: 2-7 against the spread in Feb
2024: 5-1-1 against spread in Feb
2023: 2-6 against spread in Feb
2022: 3-5 against spread in Feb

13-22 against the number in February last 5 seasons. Perhaps some truth to this. Is it because we inflate the numbers vs bad non-con teams or because Big 12 coaches figure us out after a few games? Maybe a bit of both.

I agree both that the ball isn’t sticking as much as weeks ago (low bar), but that passing for passing’s sake isn’t always good, especially if an opponent is pushing your guys out to the three point line and trying to jump passes. glass half-full is there are ways to counter perimeter pressure, and I think one of these games (possibly even Saturday) an opponent is finally going to be called for 20+ fouls for bodying Iowa State’s bigs up top constantly. The question is if the coaching staff can come up with a solution and the players can execute over the next month+, not just in the near term

I actually agree with you - but what we were doing was producing nothing. Lack of production from our guards was a huge problem. He has a knack for getting through tight places and for getting fouled. I still would have given him a shot, and said it during the game. Neither of us are a coach - so does not really matter.

I just found myself being bothered by the lack of adjustments. It scares me that we are so stubborn about the daily habits that we refuse to adjust when it is clear we need to.

First half run we gave up after taking 9 point lead, offense had clearly bogged down, ball was stuck and not moving...why don't we call a timeout to calm everyone down, get a play to run?

Same thing second half, kept finding myself thinking, why won't we take a timeout?

And finally, agree with others, everyone's three point shot was off, why not mix things up and throw Nelson in and see if he can create a spark. He is in the right place in the rotation, but he does bring a different skillset than others. Why not give him a chance? He has sparked us earlier in the season.

Otz continues to be stubborn with timeouts.

I don't suggest calling one every time opponent hits a couple of consecutive or maybe our offense gets bogged, but sometimes when it's a combination of those you have to say f**** it, let's pause & reset.

I can't disagree more with the posts that suggest a lack of senior leadership. There have been many examples of Tamin's leadership over the 4 seasons. He may not be vocal, but he gives his all, which speaks louder than words. I'm not saying he, or anybody else, played well last night.

TCU took time outs which gave ISU time to meet as well.

And, gave up after an early 9 point lead?

What does that even mean?

Honestly wasn’t shocked we lost this game. Having a lead and finishing the way we did sucked though. TCU is a tricky team to figure out. They KU dead to rights in the Phog, played Michigan and Florida down to the wire as well. Also obviously had a rough stretch in the Big 12.

Just a bad, bad game in all respects.
Can't blame it from a "road game" perspective.
One could hear a pin drop throughout. Hardly Hilton, hardly Lawwrence.

JJ drives us ALL nuts at times via plenty of turnovers. I don't get the staffs reluctance to "tone him down."
The occasional Royce-type pass is a thing of beauty, yet for every one of these incredible tosses, there's 2-3 to's that leave us shaking our heads.

Tamin. Less than 30% from three.
He isn't improving in this regard.
Yes, I love Tamin, but damn, I'm hardly optimistic when he shoots a 3.

Blake. Yuh never know if he's gonna show up, both ends.

Toure. A LOT to work on offensively.
Awesome d.

Heise. Yuh never know, offensively.

Batemon. I predicted a strong showing from him last night I'll refrain from looking at his stats.

MM. He'll shake outta this 3 pt "slump," hopefully this weekend.

68% ft shooting.... my high school did a bit better. Good night.
