*** Official #5 IOWA STATE vs TCU Game(Day) Thread ***

They were in a bunch of weird games throughout the conference season that they pulled off, almost lost the first round tourney game and were behind for quite a bit in the 2nd round vs. Auburn.
and they ended up blowing Auburn out.

I am a big believer in letdowns after emotionally draining games

Happens all the time

UNC beats Duke loses on road tonight to Miami by 9 or 10

I think KU has a letdown
The difference is KU has a lot of days to rest and reset. UNC only had two days.

and they ended up blowing Auburn out.

Yeah they pulled away at the end with about 10 minutes left.

To close out the regular season title they were behind about the whole game at Tech.

They were really good, and needed things to fall their way to have that kind of season like Nebraska missing free throws in Lincoln iirc.

I don’t think it’s losing our minds, it’s the frustration of losing hope that maybe THIS year we’ll get to the next level.
Agreed here, it’s the TJ fade in February into March when it matters where you start to lose faith over just being overrated and overhyped because we are just adjusting down expectations again

Defense gets you on the floor in TJ’s system, pros and cons to that but ultimately what we have to live with. Lack of adjustments is what kills us in these games, I think the offensive struggles should’ve gotten Batemon more playing time in the second half, 1 shot from him is unacceptable.
It’s really hard to win when you get so little offense out of two guards playing huge minutes like Toure and Heise. It’s one thing if you have a great defensive and rebounding 5 that doesn’t do much on offense.

Wings/ combos have to be offensive players. Not saying they both need to be double digit scorers, but things are much more difficult for everyone else offensively. At least with Batemon teams have to close out and create some space in the lane where Jefferson can work, Tamin can attack, and that frees up looks for Milan.

I am still holding out hope Heise can shoot like he did down the stretch last year, but every time it looks like that’s going to happen he has a cold game.

Mention foul and free throw discrepancy?

No, just like if ISU gets an advantage in games by being able to dictate and get the defense out of position, TCU was better at that last night overall.

Some bad calls/noncalls in there too but ISU didn't assert themselves very well.

ISU is a sweet 16 team. After that, it depends on which ISU team shows up. They are not a Final 4 team at this point. Get to the sweet 16 and then see what happens. I'm not expecting a Final 4 appearance.. this team just does not have that kind of toughness.

My biggest concern (and it was a first half problem that carried over to the second) is that when your big man (JJ) has more turn-overs than your point guard (Lipsey) has assists; maybe stop feeding him the ball or letting him play hero-ball. A change was needed at half-time that wasn't made.

Agreed, it is either firing on all cylinders, or they are flat and lifeless. This game, Baylor, KU, and Cincinnati all had similar feels to them, just no energy. We are extremely lucky to go 1-3 in them and almost 2-2. In the tournament we won't be able to **** around like this against a mid major team fresh off a conference tournament win and some momentum. Win these next three though and it will help a lot.

It’s really going to come down to matchups. Teams with a lot of athleticism are going to give us fits. Our bench is also not nearly good enough to get us on a deep run. With those issues alone, beyond sweet 16 is probably pretty unlikely.

Unfortunately, we had to feed Jefferson the ball to score. Our 3 point shooters were not hittin' jack. Jefferson was our offense.

A false narrative to keep things interesting I guess.

First two years: limited athletically and offensively and able to get good early wins with defense before other teams gelled in years with really strong Big 12 teams. I can't get past how people didn't see that.

Somehow the '22 team wasn't tired in the tourney to get past two favorable matchups. '23 got back to life after cutting the toxic piece loose and had everyone have their worst grade out at the same time vs. Pitt. Probably overseeing too iirc.

Year 3: generally healthy and depth/talent to do just fine in the last part of the season including dominating the Big 12 tourney (aided by an injured Houston team that had things cut short as a result)

Year 4: two main guards injured including one missing several games and shutting down, people act like ISU is '05 UNC with a 2nd wave of McD's All Americans ready to go.

I didn't think they looked tired last night, just kind of in a fog/funk like at UC and several games in December.

They're a little feast or famine and hopefully they can find the middle somewhere and be able to work through games like last night instead of stumbling around.

So in conclusion:

Lipsey shouldn’t ever shoot 3s
Jefferson should never dribble
Buchanan or Pleta can’t dunk
We suck
We aren’t making the second weekend
Toure provides nothing offensively
Iowa is going to go further than us in the tournament.

Did I catch all of the dumb takes?

We had a bad game on the road in conference it happens, it has happened twice this year. I’d say that’s pretty good. It wasn’t too long ago we were that TCU team scrapping hard for everything.

Bottom line is they come home for 2 tough matchups that will have the guys motivated. A performance like this may help them, and everyone in the program will be looking to right the ship.

Jesus we are 21-3, try to have a little enjoyment.

We are 21-3 with the hardest part of the schedule left to play. We still don't know what our team is until the next THREE games happen. Are we still top 5? Don't know. Are we just 12 to 18 range, possibly.
