Dom Nelson - The Defibrillator

It's always hard to tell with this staff and these situations, but clearly he's not meeting their requirements in some aspects, or just simply isn't better than the other options that can take those minutes. I think we all know that the team could use a slasher, get to the bucket off the dribble guy, so whatever it is apparently outweighs that need.

The reason you have solid depth is certain games call for certain players. Last night, we couldn’t get to the rim. They were trapping up top and able to recover because we don’t have anyone quick enough to attack the rim off one or two bounces. Nelson could have done that.

To me, it’s our biggest offensive flaw. Who can take someone off the dribble? Tamin is good off the catch attacking, but isn’t going to break you down. Milan isn’t going to attack off the dribble. Toures handle isn’t there yet. JJ will attack off the dozen dribbles. We need a straight line driver

The problem is he doesn’t pass when he attacks off the dribble which gives him the option to miss a layup or get fouled and go 1-2 from the line.

Unfortunately, Nelson has not shown as willing of a passer as he had at Utah Valley. His propensity for turnovers remains a problem. Nonetheless, his ability to drive and/or get the FT line is something that ISU needs when the offense grinds to a halt.

Nelson is a similar player in function to Melvin Council. Higher usage, not super efficient, but can stress defenses with just dribble drives to loosen opposing defenses when other options are not working. FWIW not advocating for Council level minutes either, but some games it would seem a couple minutes for Nelson for a change of pace could be valuable.

I was going to say, the number of outcomes with him is so small, and none of them are very good (unless you're the opponent). He can't shoot, doesn't pass, and he doesn't really have moves, though he does have amazing straight line speed. Problem is it's February and the scout is out on him. He's a one trick pony with not enough time to develop another trick. I'd be surprised if he's back at ISU next season, even if he is granted more eligibility.

We just need our 8 to be better than last night and we’ll be great.
